“Making a Family Home” Book Review & Giveaway
I recently had the opportunity to review a book called, Making a Family Home, by Shannon Honeybloom. I really enjoyed reading through it! I love that Shannon invites us into her home and life and tells us how she has made (and how we can make) a house into our home. I love that she involves her children in daily chores and activities and strives to warm up different parts of the home. Some of the chapters of her book include “At Home with Children,” “The Front Porch,” “The Playroom,” “The Backyard and Garden,” and more!
Shannon Honeybloom says, “More than merely a dwelling, the definition of home extends beyond the meaning of a house and contains an additional poetic meaning. There’s the saying, ‘Home is where the heart is.’ Creating a home for our family can be both a challenge and a pleasure. Creating a home is a process of imbuing our space with soul and spirit, surrounding our family with love, care, comfort.”
Inside “Making a Family Home,” you will learn:
• How to make your home warm and cozy
• How to support your child’s development at home
• How to involve your children in homemaking – cooking, crafting, cleaning, and so on
• How to create routines that support difficult transitions (bedtime, mealtime, and so on)
• How to get more play and leisure use out of your yard
• How to create a community of support for your family life
MY THOUGHTS
I think this is a great book for families who have a desire to have a home versus just a “house” to live in. I love that she includes her family in the book. I love that I can identify with her and her family and that I can use her ideas to make my own house a “family home.” I give this book a 4 out of 5 rating for overall enjoyment.

I am an old-fashioned full-time homemaker. I cook, I do canning, I bake cupcakes for school, I clean, I do crafts, I sew, I paint, I lay tiles, I do plumbing. I singlehandedly landscaped my entire yard, installing a cottage garden and a vegetable garden from scratch. I toil endlessly toward achieving the goal that this woman claims to have achieved. I want to see how she did it.

I grew up in a large family with 6 younger siblings.
I would love for this to be a book in my home as a tribute to this way of life.

I am currently majoring in Family and Consumer Science. I LOVE any kind of book that can improve the life of my family and kids. I would read this book from cover to cover, and no doubt there would be highlighted all over the pages. Writing, math and all of that is good to learn, but the development adn raising of your family and relationships with them are what are most important. 🙂
i love a book that teaches how to do things mverno@roadrunner.com
Not only do I want this book, but I NEED this book. I am a bit of a failure at creating a warm and nurturing environment. I don’t like to spend money, I am not very creative, and I seem to lack the girly-girly domestic gene, and our home reflects this. We don’t have curtains, our bedding doesn’t match, our decorating style is “minimalistic” because we are afraid to take a risk (or spend a buck for that matter). It is embarrassing to me that our three kids have to live here.

I love home books!
I would love to ready the chapter on how to involve your children in homemaking. I want to make sure my son is a good homemaker. I think it is a valuable skill for both boys and girls. My husband is inept in anything related to the home, his momma did everything for her boys and never taught them to be independent. It is a good thing I am a SAHM.
