8 Tips for Having a Good House Moving Experience
Today, on Redhead Mom, I’m sharing a partnered blog post about ways to have a good moving experience.
I’ve moved from house to house a number of times in my life and got pretty dang good with a tape gun (aka packing up and taping a LOT of moving boxes). When it comes to moving, it can be an overwhelming task. Over the years, I’ve discovered some tips on how to have a good house moving experience.
1 – Make a list. Things can get kind of chaotic when moving as you are trying to pack and move multiple items from different places throughout your home to another placer. Having a list can help you keep track of what there is to do, as well as check off the items you’ve accomplished during your move. I personally LOVE to check off items I’ve completed as I feel a sense of accomplishment in moving towards the overall goal – MOVING!
2 – Hire a mover or rent a moving truck. Depending on how far you’re moving or how much you are moving, you may want to consider hiring a mover or renting a moving truck. Learn more about hiring a mover.
3 – Clear out the clutter. Moving is the perfect time to clear out the clutter and throw out things you haven’t used within the past year. You can always donate your items if you don’t have the heart to throw it in the trash.
4 – Label boxes! This is one of the most important tips of all that I’ve learned over the years. LABEL YOUR BOXES. Nothing is worse than looking for an item you need and having blank boxes looking back at you. I’ve found it helpful to pack by room and then write the name of the room on the box, as well as a few descriptive items (i.e., Kitchen – blender or pots). This will be a lifesaver when it comes time to unpack your items in your new home. Be sure to have more than one Sharpie marker on hand (in case one is misplaced or runs out of ink). I also recommend writing on more than one side of the box so you can see the label no matter which way the box is turned.
5 – Ask for help. Even though you may think you can do it yourself, I highly recommend you enlist the help of your kids, nearby family members, or friends to help you with the packing and moving process. As far as other people packing your boxes go, be sure to let them know how you’d like the boxes packed (i.e., pack by room and list a few items on the box)
6 – Keep necessities easy to access. I like to set things to the side that I know I will need to have access to before everything is unpacked. These include kitchen items and food, bathroom items, and clothing I may need to wear. You can still pack them, but make sure they don’t get buried in the piles of boxes that you’re moving. Label them so you know you’ll need them easy to access.
7 – Check out your new home and plan for moving paths. Before moving to your home, you likely got a pretty good look at the neighborhood or surrounding areas. To learn more, be sure to reach out to local real estate agents about one-way streets, alleys, or other things that might create a burden when moving.
8 – Take care of yourself during the move and celebrate after! It is very important to make sure you are taking care of yourself throughout the moving process. Ensure you are getting enough sleep, drinking enough water, and eating as you will be exerting a lot of energy in your move. After you move to your new place, it’s time to celebrate! Bring out a nice bottle of wine that pairs with a delicious hot meal. You did it! Enjoy your new place!
Moving can be a daunting task, but it can also be a positive thing in your life. Be sure to take your time and follow these tips to have a good moving experience.
