Everybody enjoys a good laugh. This is what makes stand-up comedy so popular. There has been a recent boom of stand-up comedy in past years. There are a variety of factors that have led to this growing trend.

The History of Stand-Up Comedy

Stand-up comedy is an art form that was born in America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Stand-up comedy is said to have started in American vaudeville in the late 1800s; more specifically the burlesque shows that were popular in New York City vaudeville theatres.

Stand-up broke away from the traditional view of comedy. There was no plot, premise, backstory, and no set or actors. There is just a solitary comedian with a microphone and some anecdotes. The challenge for the comedian is to make a connection with the audience that makes them laugh at the jokes being told by the comedian. Since its inception, stand-up comedy has the same agenda today as it has so many years later.

Comedy Clubs

The comedy circuit is made up of a network of clubs that feature stand-up comedians. This circuit has grown over the decades, and many comedians have and continue to earn livings telling jokes in comedy clubs around the US.

Streaming Platform Popularity

The rise of social media and streaming services has created an on-demand mentality that has allowed people to watch and create the content that they desire. The surge of comedy specials promoted by streaming services like Netflix has dramatically impacted the boom of real-life comedy clubs.

The ability for anyone to post comical content like a stand up comedy documentary that the masses can enjoy has created a dynamic that has allowed people to gain fame and notoriety from being well known by publishing content to sites like YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. Pending Decline in Raunchy Comedy

Comedy has gotten increasingly risqué over the years. For a while, it seemed that it was almost expected that a comedian would have foul language and speak about topics that were not appropriate for the whole family. Recently, many comedians have come under fire for their unsavory messages and behavior. This has led many to reconsider the current state of stand-up comedy.

Growing Demand for Family-Friendly Comedians

People are starting to realize that stand-up comedy does not have to be vulgar to be funny. Families deserve to enjoy a good joke without feeling like they will be offended at some point during the show. This sentiment has created a demand for clean comedians that tell family-friendly jokes. The popularity of Christian comedians is also on the rise. This trend is a flashback to a time when stand-up comedians didn’t feel the need to use bad language to land a punch line.

Conclusion

With the demand for comedy being so high right now, there are a lot of platforms for comedy enthusiasts to enjoy a good laugh. However, stand-up comedy is one of the most coveted forms of comedy today. Only time will tell what direction this time-honored form of entertainment is headed next.

What is your preference when it comes to comedy?
