National Preparedness Month – Emergency Plan For Pets & $25 Giveaway

September is National Preparedness Month and families everywhere are being encouraged to get their emergency kits and plans put together!  I’m excited to be working with Clorox and American Red Cross, bringing useful emergency preparedness information and fun giveaways to you for 2 more weeks!  For many people, pets are an integral member of the family; however, when disaster strikes, pets are often left out of the emergency preparedness plan.

As you design your plan, here are a few steps to keep in mind to make sure your beloved pets are taken care of:

(1) Create a pet survival kit along with your emergency preparedness kit.  Include:

– Pet food
– Vet records
– Can opener
– Cat litter/pans (if applicable)
– Medications (if applicable)

(2) Keep your pet’s identification tags up to date and securely fastened to their collar.  In case you are separated, your pet’s locator will know exactly whom to contact.

(3) Make sure to choose an alternate location within your emergency preparedness plan that allows pets.  Keep in mind that many emergency shelters are unable to accept pets due to public health reasons.

If you’re ever concerned about including your pet in your emergency preparedness plan and need advice, contact your local animal shelter or animal control office.

    thanks

  4. I have a cat. I always wanted one growing up, but my mom was (is) allergic! So as a child, I had a gerbil and a parakeet. A cat is much more interactive and cuddly. 😉

  5. Since I live in an apartment now, I can’t have pets. 🙁 But I grew up with dogs and horses! I’d have a pony for a pet if my apartment complex wouldn’t complain. LOL

  6. Primarily cat person here, but I’ve also had horses most of my life. Thank you for pointing out the need to add your pets to your emergency plan! I’ve got the cat all planned (litter, food, crate…), but am a bit relieved that the plan for the horse isn’t needed right now (no truck, no trailer).

  7. Even though I’m a dog person at heart, I have a cat. I just don’t have the energy right now to give a dog all the attention it needs.

  8. Over the years we’ve had dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, fish, turtles, chipmunks… I think that’s it. But the only true pet for me is a dog. They are the best best friends.

  9. I grew up with the sweetest dog named Lucky and the friendliest cat in the world named Puff. They both had long lives but are gone now and I miss them!

  10. I had several dogs, cats & fish growing up … I had some chinchillas for almost 24 hours but the neghbor’s dog got into their cage and, well we won’t go there today …

  11. I’ve had pets most of my life. Mostly dogs though. I recently lost my dear pooch, Keesha. When the time is right, I’ll be getting another best friend. Thanks.

  12. I grew up with two beautiful pets! A siamese/persian mix and a gordon setter. I miss having a pet and plan on getting a dog soon!

  14. We have a cat, Jack and a dog, Annie, both of which are resuce animals and of indeterminant breed! Oh, and a bunch of Black Mollies. Spay and neuter people!

  15. I don’t have a pet now because our landlord won’t allow it, but I had both cats and dogs as a kid. My favorite pet was my cat Charlie.

  16. I have 2 dogs, one is a 14 year old chow /shepherd mix. The other is a 4 year old wheaton mix. They are both rescue babies and just the sweetest kids on the block.

  17. We have 2 pets,a pomerian mix named Prissy,an a yellow cat named Bugg, they keep us entertained with their different personalities

  18. We had a Shar-pei but he died 12 yrs. ago. He was my baby and I still miss him. We’ve tried to get other pets but none of them compare to BoBo so we are petless right now. thank you!

  19. I had a dog when I was growing up, cats until I married somebody who was allergic to them, and now my daughter has gerbils.

  20. I grew up with Poodles, Golden Retrievers, and Hamsters. My favorite family member was a Chihuahua named Scrappy. I miss that little guy! My fiance’s favorite family member was a Maltese named Chesterkins. Right now we have two cats whom we adopted because they both had something wrong with them and had a slim chance of getting adopted – a Russian Blue male and a white mix female. We are hoping to adopt a new puppy soon! Whooo…that was a mouthful. 🙂

  21. I have a pittbull. Never thought I would own a pittbull ever. My dog that died of cancer was a black lab and all the dogs I grew up with were black labs. But Lady is sweet as can be and well trained. She’s been to two obedience classes and agility class and gets along great with people and other dogs.

  22. Your post really made me think about this (which I never have).
My cat GiGi thanks you for bring it to my attention.
    Thanks for the contest.

  23. I had a little runt dog who got no bigger than 6 lbs. She was in the snow where someone had left her to die. She lived a long, happy life at our house and we all loved her tons.

  24. We had a Cocker spaniel for many years. He passed away this summer, but are looking into getting our kids a dog for Christmas.

  25. I lived out in the country and had a ton of animals… dogs, cats, horses, a goat, chickens, ducks, rabbits, other birds and rodents, fish, and a pot belly pig.

  26. Well I have a lot of pets including my best friend who is a chihuahua and let me tell you I wouldn’t go anywhere that wouldn’t accept him, I’d rather sleep on the sidewalk! I also have two cats and a ferret 😀 Growing up I’ve maybe had everything else, not kidding!
