I Am My Child’s Mom

I try and listen to Dr. Laura in the mornings – she’s on the radio on the weekdays from 9:00 to 12:00 p.m. and quite often she says, “I am my kid’s mom.”

I like listening to her – sometimes she is funny, other times she is sensitive, and quite often she is very straightforward and blunt (often lacking in empathy), but people listen to her – me included.

I was thinking today that I am my kids’ mom. Whether I am walking through a store or to the gym, I often get smiles from passing strangers. I watch as they look at the kids trailing behind me or holding my hand. I can see that they are counting how many there are and then often times I hear them say to the other person, “Wow….3 boys.” It’s quite funny to see how amazed people are that we have 3 children.

Today, we had to run a few errands and the boys (all of them) did an awesome job. They stayed close by, didn’t argue, didn’t cry, didn’t yell, and followed directions. I even had one lady compliment me on doing a good job with them and that I must have my hands full. I smiled and told her that today was a good day 🙂

Often times, people will ask me what I do for my job or career. I tell them I work full time at home. They then proceed to ask what I do. I tell them that I am a full-time mom, wife, cook, photographer, housekeeper, and more. The list is never ending and it is one of the toughest, yet most rewarding jobs I’ve ever had.

A girl at church expressed that sometimes she feels unappreciated and inadequate as a stay-at-home mom. She began to talk about the movie, “Hancock” and how there is a mom who is beautiful and smart and a superhero. She wished she could be like that. Then she thought about it for a little while and realized she is a superhero. She may not be able to move mountains or throw trains or fly through the air, but she is raising children with morals and values and saving the world one child at a time. She is a super mom, as are the rest of us.

I’m glad that I can be at home with my kids during the day and raise them. I love to see them show their curiosity for things (even if it involves the Disney Cars toys in the microwave being blasted to oblivion). I am thankful my boys are healthy and my husband has a strong desire to take care of his family. I love being a mother, wife, daughter, and sister. Without my family, none of this would be possible.

What a beautiful post! I didn’t know you were a Dr. Laura fan! I used to be a faithful listener. I’ve fallen off the radar though and you made me miss her. I love what you said about people smiling at you and your kids in public. I was thinking about that lately and about how I’m going to miss those looks when my kids get too old to get them from strangers. It truly is a blessing to be a young mother, thanks for the reminder!

I can’t help but laugh every time I listen to Dr. Laura. I just don’t feel like she really listens to her callers most of her time.
