The Struggle is Real: A Wild Guide to Growing Up for Moms and Sons from Old Spice

This content was sponsored by Old Spice, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Being a teenager is tough! Ask any adult who’s been there and most of us agree that the teen years were awkward with all the changes our bodies went through. Being a mom of 6 kids, I see our kids starting to go through these changes. Being a teen can be hard as it is, but being ready for it is half the battle. In our home, we have 4 boys, half of whom are going through that awkward change in life. With that comes the breakouts, facial hair, body hair, mood swings (yes, boys have them too), and deepening, cracking voices. While there isn’t a whole lot we can do for the voice changes, there is something us moms can do to prevent body odor that arises from the increase of hair on our teens’ and pre-teens’ bodies. There is Old Spice!

I don’t know about you, but as a mom, I was always there to talk to our boys when they were sick or not feeling well. Now that they’re older, it’s a little different for me as mom. Try asking your pre-teen or teen if they have hair under their armpits so you know when it’s time to start wearing deodorant so you can buy it for them. They do NOT want to talk to mom about it…at all! This can make for some pretty divisive and awkward mom/son conversations. Boo! Often times this becomes more of a battle with the back-to-school stress, when stress levels are extra high.

Old Spice is here to help. After all, according to ancient boy-law, “If something is cool, moms can’t like it. If moms like something, it can’t be cool.” That is, until the invention of Old Spice‘s new eGuide, “The Struggle is Real: A Wild Guide to Growing-Up for Moms & Sons.”

Designed for moms and sons, Old Spice is sparking conversations by sharing their hilarious and shocking new national mom/son study findings … while also offering helpful tips from popular parenting expert and mom of 4 boys, Deborah Gilboa, M.D. (aka “Dr. G”).

Inspired by Old Spice’s Wild Collection and Wild mom/son ad campaign that looks at the mom/son dynamic, Old Spice’s eGuide digs deeper into the mom and son relationship to reveal:

  • The “Finsta” phenomenon is widespread (fake Instagram account, where teen boys “hide” from their parents). In fact, Old Spice reveals that 99% of moms and 97% of sons overwhelmingly agree that most teen boys have secret social media accounts!

  • For moms, the biggest signal that a boy is on his way to becoming a man is when he showers without being told (29%). Boys, however, see it a bit differently. For them, it’s a tie between getting a driver’s license (23%) or shaving for the first time (23%).

For nearly 80 years, Old Spice has been helping guys navigate the seas of manhood and the brand knows that the transition from boyhood to manhood is a wild one. That’s why Old Spice, the No. 1 selling male anti-perspirant/deodorant brand in the U.S., is arming young guys with tools to help unleash their inner wild, while also taming odor and sweat – starting with the Old Spice Wild Collection line-up of anti-perspirants, deodorants, body washes and body sprays.

The Wild Collection is inspired by the personality characteristics of the wild kingdom, available in NEW Krakengärd, Bearglove, Wolfthorn and Hawkridge scents.

The Wild Collection provides young guys with a variety of scents allowing them to express their personalities and spread their wings with confidence (but not too high and far, mom!) With the Old Spice Wild Collection, mom will hardly even smell that she has a son, while her son gets to unleash his wild side in a responsible, great-smelling way.

The Old Spice Wild Collection is available in anti-perspirants, deodorants, body washes and body sprays, in the following scents:

  • NEW Krakengärd smells like citrus, fresh herbs, and the unspeakable power of the ancient ocean.
  • Bearglove commands grizzly bear-level respect with smells of apple, citrus, and spice.
  • Hawkridge outwits unsuspecting stink with its sandalwood and vanilla scent.
  • Wolfthorn is the sort of sophisticated wolf who wears a suit that has a suave, sweet orange scent.

  2. My son has started using Old Spice and he is right on time because he has started to show signs of aging and odors as well. The Old Spice does the trick and they have all kinds of great products.

  3. I am scared about social media with my son. I will probably be pretty strict on him but in a way that hopefully he doesn’t feel locked in. Old spice always has some great smells. My husband uses it and my son will too.

  4. Ah yes, good ol’ Old Spice! My husband loves it as an aftershave and I never realized to give it to a teen for some coverage as well (deodorant-wise)! Great reminder for back-to-school teens.

  5. I have 3 teens and there’s nothing like that moment when their deodorant quits. O M G!!! I love that Old Spice is changing things up. I remember my grandfather using Old Spice and I think it’s wonderful they’re revamping and reaching a younger audience with new scents and a product that works.

  6. The changes are certainly a challenge. My kids started using deodorant when they were in second grade because it was something they saw so many adults do as part of an everyday routine. I never had to convert a kid to wearing deodorant, but wow, the push for using a toothbrush responsibly was a challenge. The variety of Old Spice adds to its appeal.

  7. I love how old spice is rebranding itself to be the choice of teenagers and young adults! When I was growing up it was my grandfathers favourite!

  8. Totally cool! I think the boys definitely deserve a line that’s for them and not end up using products for grown men. I’m sure they’ll enjoy using these products as well. And the moms will love that it keeps their boys for smelling! Lol.

  9. I love that you touched on the mother son connection during a stage when it can be especially hard to communicate with a child. Old Spice body wash is a staple for the men in our family and I have yet to be disappointed by any of their scents.

  10. My friend is a middle school teacher and said that so many of the kids are struggling with body odor. And we go through this in our house– yes, the struggle is real! Now, if they only made a deodorant for tweens 🙂

  11. I have two boys that will definitely appreciate these products! It’s something that I also appreciate as a mother. It’s important for me to teach them how to take care of their bodies and Old Spice totally helps with that!

  12. I know it’s not easy to teach kids especially the boys about proper hygiene so it’s good to have products that are completely focused on them! I am loving this line from Old Spice!

  13. I have 1 son, but he is not quite one yet but I already know I am in for a wild ride with him! It is hard enough teaching my 4 year old girl hygiene, I can’t imagine what it will be like with this little one lol

  14. I don’t have kids yet, but I don’t know if I could handle watching my sons grow up! I think I’d probably cry in the middle of the store everytime I had to buy them something “manly” like deodorant lol.

  15. My oldest son is almost 10 and right now he uses Dove for his underarms since he sweats a lot. I do like Old Spice so when he is older we will probably switch to that!!

  16. LOL – “When they bathe without being told.” When does that happen? I used to love Old Spice when my grandfather wore it and it’s got such a nice, classic smell. I’m glad to see them changing things up to stay relevant. Keeping this in mind for Christmas stocking stuffers.

  17. My oldest is just about to be 14 and he has lots of old spice. I’m not sure which scents but he loves smelling good, and it works!

  18. Annemarie LeBlanc

My sons and husband have been using Old Spice aftershave. I would look into the other products as well. I know they’ll love to have Old Spice body sprays. I am getting these from the store tomorrow.

  19. Our Family World

I just got the Krakengard body wash for my boys. They are raving about how good it smells and how it gets them nice and clean. Best purchase for the week. 🙂

  20. This is such a fun campaign. Boys don’t always want to talk to their moms about their changing bodies so this can definitely make the conversation easier. After all, it’s mom who will end up buying you your deodorant.

  21. Victoria Heckstall

Moms or dads should be aware of this. Especially when teens are becoming more sensitive, parents should know how to treat them with good communication and some privacy. Appreciate and understand them.

  22. I love Old Spice and especially the fact that they have “kept up” with the younger generations. There is just something about that brand that brings back good memories!

  23. My son is almost ten and his body started making big changes a year ago. I guess he’s going to be an early bloomer. He’s been using (and needing to use) Old Spice for over a year now. Crazy, right? His brother got him a gift set and he’s been using it (the brand) and loving it ever since.

  24. This can be a touchy subject even for dads to talk with their sons about. I’m impressed by this campaign. Old Spice did a nice job putting it together.

  25. I have three boys and I can’t believe that they’re all going to get big at the same time. They’re all two years apart and I can’t believe how fast they’re already growing. They’ll be here before I know it!

  26. I do not have teens yet, but I do have a husband who uses Old Spice. I love the different scents they have.
