Spring is finally here and it’s the perfect time for spring cleaning! I don’t know about you, but when spring arrives, I have this desire to start cleaning and throwing away things we don’t use anymore or medicines that have expired. One of the things I do when it comes to spring cleaning in our house is to go through our medicine cabinet and throw away those items that are expired.

Sometimes when we start spring cleaning, we think about cleaning our house, but don’t really think about our medicine cabinet. Medicines have expiration dates that tend to get overlooked, but it’s always a good idea to check the dates and re-stock any essentials for when sick gets real! Check out these tips for Spring Cleaning – Your Medicine Cabinet.

1 – Clean one medicine cabinet at a time. In our home, we have 2 bathrooms, which means we have 2 medicine cabinets. However, we only store medicines in the medicine cabinet in our room. While we only store medicines in our medicine cabinet, I’m sure there are people out there who have more than one medicine cabinet they use. Take it slow and clean out one medicine cabinet at a time.

2 – Have a garbage bag nearby and throw away expired medicines. It’s amazing how many medicines can expire in a year and you don’t want your bathroom trash can overflowing with expired medications. I like to throw them away in a garbage bag that I can tie up and immediately toss in the trash can when I’m done.

3 – Make a list. As you toss the expired medications in the trash, be sure to make a list of those medicines you throw away so you know what to replace the next time you go to the store.

4 – Replace expired medications. Now that you’ve cleaned out your medicine cabinet and thrown away expired medicines, it’s time to replace those expired medications. Be sure to scope out sales and print out or cut out coupons to use toward your medicine restock purchase.

  1. I don’t have much in my medicine cabinet, so cleaning it out, does not take much effort. I don’t keep meds more than a year, try to buy fresh, new meds.

  2. I have always been a huge fan of their products. Reliable and very trustworthy. I have 3 shelves in my medicine cabinet so I start with the top and work my way down. I check all dates and get rid of all medicines that are old. I make a note of which items to repurchase and the items that I am sure I will use.

To spring clean my medicine cabinet I go through and throw out all the medications that are no longer in date.

  4. I Spring clean my medicine cabinet by looking at my old medications and throwing them out and replacing the over the counter medications. It is awful to look for a medication and it is not their and or it is old.

  5. Go through all the medications to throw out expired ones. Then, organize them in the medicine cabinet by use (allergies, cold, cough, etc.).

  6. I just realized I had over the the counter medicines that were 3 years and more out of date. I don’t have any tips because I clearly suck at it. I am going to throw the old ones out this week I have decided.

  7. I have a medicine closet instead of cabinet, but same kind of thing. Go through all expired medications & throw them out. Organize areas according to product/ailments. Remember to re-stock what you get rid of, so you don’t find yourself out of something when you need it!

Each year, our police do the drug takeback. I clean out the med cabinet and get rid of anything that is expired or will be expiring within 60 days. I figure if it’s that close to expiring we either do not really use it so I’d rather get rid of it safely.

I take everything out and check expiration dates only those that are good go back on and things beside medication, if I haven’t used it in the past 6 months I probably never will, I get rid of those too.
