I love to start my day with a cold glass of orange juice and my boys like to drink it as well.  The mornings can get pretty darn hectic getting three boys to school on time, as well as getting myself ready for the day ahead.  Quality time with your family in the morning often gets pushed aside.  Despite the hustle and bustle that come with weekday mornings, finding time to briefly connect over regular activities can set the tone for the day ahead.  I learned this from my parents and work hard to incorporate it into my own family.T

To help families get the emotional and physical fuel needed to start their day off right, the Florida Department of Citrus recently partnered with parenting expert and author, Dr. Michele Borba and nutritionist and author, Elizabeth Ward, to offer simple and healthy morning solutions. To help ensure a few moments of quality time together, designate time in your family’s normal morning routine as “unplugged time” – time without turning on the television, computer or video games. Additionally, a nutritious breakfast has been associated with weight loss and weight maintenance, as well as improved nutrient intake,[1] so sit down with your family around the breakfast table or grab something on the go – you’ll help each person get a good start to the day.

In the mornings, I dish up breakfast for the boys and ask them how they slept the night before.  Something I would like to start doing with my boys is to challenge them to do one (if not more) kind thing for someone else as they go through the day.  Often times, I find myself running around the house, picking up things, packing lunches, and trying to get myself ready.  This is definitely something I will diligently work on in our new home.

I was raised by a single mom whom I have always admired, respected and looked up to for being so strong yet so loving. I’m an only child. But you! 3 boys! I’m a huge fan, Shannon! Cheers to you!

I really believe that sharing meals together is really powerful in a family… I am going to try this out this week with breakfast… Usually it’s me preparing their food and then moving on to the next task…

Mornings are hectic for us too. I set aside dinner as a family meal with quality time but I really should make breakfast that way too, rather than me running around getting things while the kids eat.
