National Preparedness Month and $25 Giveaway #1
It’s National Preparedness Month during the month of October! I’m excited to team up with Clorox and the American Red Cross and bring some helpful tips as well as fun giveaways! We all know that disasters can happen quickly and when you’re least expecting them…whether it be an earthquake, flood, hurricane..you name it. The most important step to staying safe is to be prepared BEFORE an emergency occurs. What are the three critical steps to create an emergency preparedness plan for your household in case of an emergency?
1 – Purchase or build an emergency preparedness kit. Your kit should house enough supplies to last your household a minimum of three days (72 hours) for evacuations and 2 weeks for emergencies at home. There will be more specific tips to come on how to build a disaster kit with your family.
- Households should create or purchase an emergency preparedness kit with enough supplies for everyone to last three days for evacuations and two weeks for emergencies at home. Include things like: water, non-perishable food, flashlight, radio, first aid kit, a multi-purpose tool, important medications and copies of personal documents. You may also include household liquid bleach such as Clorox for cleaning and disinfecting and emergency water sanitation.
2 – Make an emergency preparedness plan. Schedule a meeting in your household to discuss what to do in case you are separated during an emergency. Choose two places to meet – one right outside the house and the other outside your neighborhood. Be sure to practice and review the plan twice a year!
3 – Get educated. Get to know the types of disasters (e.g. hurricanes, floods, or forest fires) prevalent in your area so that you can better tailor both your kit and plan. Find out how local officials will contact residents of your city to advise of important safety information. AND, get first aid training. Learn critical techniques like CPR and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
For more information, please visit www.clorox.com/redcross and download the preparedness guide: Prepare Yourself Now for Peace of Mind Later.

I would include a battery operated radio so that we’ll know what’s going on. I’d also include flashlights and/or lamps, batteries, first aid supplies, bottled water and energy bars. I’d also include candles and matches … last year when out power went out for several days in the winter, lighting candles actually raised the temperature in the room by a couple of degrees … enough to take the chill out of the air.

I’d have to say the usuals like water and flashlights and batteries. But my daughter has a stuffed animal and my son has a blanky that I’m not sure they could live without. In my emergency kit, I have a backup for each of them. Probably wouldn’t be the same as the original, but in an emergency when it’s gone forever, they would probably soften the blow!

Flashlights, for sure. We always needed those when the hurricanes knocked our lights out.
We live in a condo and smack in the middle of earthquake country. We have made our emergency kits and make it a point to update them twice a year. My kids know exactly what to do, we’ve set up a mini call center with my aunt out of state in case the lines are clogged in our state and a mini cash stash just in case supplies are needed before regular services are available again. I’ve made these kits for my home and my car so that we have every possibility of being covered during this event.

I’ve had to evacuate with 10 minutes notice during the Southern California firestorms in 2003. Wildfires burned right up to the trees in my yard. Many things in the house had to be ditched due to smoke damage. Since then I keep a basic kit in my car which has one gallon of water, and a lightweight tote with a change of clothing, a fleece blanket, undies, granola bars, some extra “change”, socks, a toothbrush, toothpaste, washcloth, hand towel, face soap and moisturizer. I also keep some important papers with me.
We’re from the metro New Orleans area and we evacuated for Hurricane Katrina – we went to Mississippi and the storm came right up through the area where we were staying. Four days of no electricity or water – it wasn’t much fun, but boy did we learn a lot about what we should have brought! If I had to include one thing in an emergency kit, it would be a hand crank radio. We really needed to hear news from home and that’s what was missed the most.
