Wendy’s High School Heisman Blog Tour & Giveaway

Wendy's High School HeismanI don’t have teenage kids at this stage in my life, but I remember being a teenager and having teenage sisters.  Not only was there school, there were extracurricular activities after school.  They included sports, music, clubs, and more.  It was difficult, but doable, to balance both school and play.  Not only was I committed to being a member of a team, but I was also focused on making good grades so I could go to a good college.

College admissions are getting more and more selective as the years go by and being admitted to college is one of the many things that weighs on a teenager’s mind.  Thanks to Mom Central, I was introduced to a program called Wendy’s High School Heisman Program.  The award is given in celebration of high school seniors who excel in academics, athletics, and community involvement – recognizing them for things they are already doing.  Colleges want well-rounded students who demonstrate dedication and commitment, making this program a great tool for the application process!

High school seniors who have a 3.0 average or higher, participate in a school-sponsored sport, and contribute to their community can apply at www.WendysHeisman.com, or a high school educator, guidance counselor, or coach can nominate them.  As an incentive, the first 41,100 applicants will receive a free Wendy’s gift card in amounts ranging from $5 to $50.  One male and one female from each high school will win the away and continue on in competition for state and national awards.  Twelve national finalists will participate in Heisman Weekened festivities during an all-expenses-paid trip Dec. 11-13 to New York City. ESPN2 will feature all 12 national finalists during the Wendy’s High School Heisman Awards Ceremony, which airs Dec. 13.  The Wendy’s High School Heisman website will display the names of all applicants and individual school winners on October 22, 2009.

Thanks to Mom Central and Wendy’s, 1 lucky reader on The Mommy-Files will win a $20 gift card to Wendy’s Restaurants!!!

  1. I didn’t. I was too busy working, babysitting, cleaning houses, doing other odd jobs. My parents were pretty poor when I was growing up, so when we turned twelve our Dad told us we had to get small jobs to buy our own clothes and such. My older brother had the lawn mowing business around us pretty tied up, so I babysat and did other such things.

  2. I was on the volleyball, softball, basketball and soccer teams at one point (not at the same time though). I was also a cheerleader and participated in drama productions.

  3. I wasn’t in any sports, but I was in the Honor Society, CSF, Kiwanettes, Spanish Club and French Club (not that any of it did me any good!)

  4. As a child I lived in a rural area in Kentucky. Some very kind sponsors made sure the 4-H Club was
available for children. Head, Heart, Hand & Health were prominent in the minds of 4-H members. There was even a camp for kids to attend in summer and if the 4-H’er came from a family of poor means
no fee was charged. At camp kids ate all they wanted and played joyfully between instructional sessions.

    Thank you for the contest.

  5. I was in choir all four years (two choirs my Senior year), and for two of those years, I went with other choir mates (band and orchestra as well) to Disney World to participate in Disney Magic Music Days.

  6. I was editor of the school newspaper and secretary of the Spanish club. There were no sports for girls when I went to high school.

  7. I was suckered into AFS- we raised money so that one student could go to another country and then return, so that all us could sit at her feet while she blathered on about the wonderful time she had.
It did prepare me for the workplace to the extent I learned not to use people the way AFS used me.

  8. I was a band geek to the end! But all the years of passionate band geekery got me my scholarship to college and it definitely paid off and gave me GREAT life opportunites and lessons. Thanks for the giveaway!

  9. I wasn’t allowed to join any groups that met after school because the school was too far from our home and I had no way to get home. I had a group of friends that did things together though mostly “pep” and working on the school yearbook.

  11. I didn’t play a sport in high school, but I always cheered for my cousin’s soccer team. I was a drama geek and on the lit mag staff. Yeah, I was one of those dyed-hair girls. 🙂

  18. Well since I was so “dramatic, I was in the school plays. I was also in FHA, French Club and powder puff football 🙂

  19. I was homeschooled, so I didn’t participate in traditional clubs, etc. I did enjoy sewing, baking, cake decorating, and similar things, so maybe that counts as home ec.? 🙂

  20. I just resubcribed to you via Bloglines – I just noticed that no new posts were coming up, and I had to come figure out what happened to your blog! Glad I’m once again able to read your posts.
