Dang!

Yesterday, a friend watched my 2 older boys for me so I could run to the store and get a few things. I took my 8 month old with me. I transferred a prescription to Safeway and received a $30 gift card! Awesome!

I stocked up with canned goods for my food storage and got the following deals:

kidney beans and garbanzo beans (0.79 per can)
tuna (0.79 per can)
tomato sauce (0.50 per can)
ketchup (0.99 per bottle – really good deal since we go through TONS of ketchup at our house)
ground beef (1.79 per pound – they usually want 3.49 per pound and it’s over 2.00 per pound at Costco)
pork and beans (0.59 per can)
– big box of Goldfishies for the kids

When I bought these items, I bought multiples – i.e. 15 cans of tuna, 10 cans of beans, 5 cans of pork and beans, etc. I was standing in line and looked up and realized the checker’s light was off. I looked over and went to the lane to the left of me. I avoided the far lane because I knew it was the express lane. There was nobody behind me and I began to load the belt with my several cans of food.

Sam was making noises and beginning to get impatient. I was trying to distract him and be friendly to the cashier at the same time. After a minute of ringing items up, she looked at me and said “Just to let you know….this is a 15 items or less line.” I looked up and there was the sign – 15 items or less. DANG!

I felt like a complete idiot! Once I looked down from the sign, I realized there were now 3 people in line behind me. They didn’t feel any pity for a mom with a small child trying to get through the line, not even realizing it was an Express line. The woman behind me continued to roll her eyes annoyingly even though I apologized to her 2 or 3 times.

It drives me nuts when people do that, but usually it’s done intentionally or without caring! DANG is all I can say 🙂

Yeah, I always expect people to take pity on me at the grocery store too when I bring the 2 kids and they are going crazy. But people rarely do. They normally roll their eyes like your situation. Think about it though, how did you react before you had kids? Probably the same way!

Funny…I had a ‘thoughtful’ grocery experience today….my kids were driving me batty, and I saw another mother having the same experience. A small smile of understanding between the two of us started a quick “I completely understand how you feel” conversation….it was great. We both walked away smiling.
