April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. In an era where smartphones seem to command our attention at every turn, the dangers of distracted driving loom larger than ever. Distracted driving is an issue unique to our time, causing too many car accident fatalities in Oklahoma that could easily be prevented. In addition to phones, other common causes of distracted driving accidents include eating or drinking, talking with passengers, pets, kids, or even changing stations on the radio. This month serves as an urgent call to action, compelling us to confront the risks and consequences of this widespread problem.

Distracted Driving in Oklahoma

Distracted driving is a leading cause of accidents on roads worldwide, with devastating effects felt by individuals, families, and communities. From checking text messages to adjusting GPS settings, even a momentary lapse in concentration can have catastrophic outcomes. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving claimed 3,522 lives in the United States alone in 2021. Additionally, young people in their 20’s make up about 27% of these fatal accidents. These sobering statistics underscore the urgent need for heightened awareness and preventive measures.

Causes of Distracted Driving

When we hear the term “distracted driving” most of us probably think of texting or talking on the phone. However, there are many other causes of distracted driving that are contributing to fatalities. Here are the leading causes of distracted driving in Oklahoma:

  3. Navigating on GPS
  4. Daydreaming
  5. Eating/Drinking
  6. Talking To Passengers
  7. Pets/Kids
  8. Self Grooming
  9. Changing Station on Radio

Oklahoma Laws on Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is banned in Oklahoma. Oklahoma was the 46th state to ban distracted driving in 2015 with their Trooper Nicholas Dees and Trooper Keith Burch Act. This act specifically bans texting while driving while other states have bans on all phone usage while driving. The penalty for texting while driving in Oklahoma is a $100 fine. 

How To Stay Focused on the Road

Staying focused on the road is crucial for safe driving. Firstly, eliminate distractions by silencing your phone and keeping it out of reach. Plan your route ahead of time to minimize the need for navigation while driving. Know B4 U Go has been a slogan encouraging people to plan their route before they begin their drive. In addition to this campaign, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation has begun another campaign Text B4 U Go taking things further encouraging citizens to send their messages before driving. Avoid engaging in activities like eating, grooming, or adjusting the radio while behind the wheel. Maintain a comfortable driving environment by adjusting seat position, mirrors, and temperature settings before setting off. Stay alert by taking regular breaks during long drives and switching drivers if possible. Lastly, remember that the safety of yourself and others depends on your undivided attention to the road ahead.
