In October, you will likely start noticing pink ribbons, pink shirts and even pink license plate covers recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In one of the neighborhoods near us, they even tie pink loofas around the tree trunks during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As women, breast cancer awareness is more than just one month a year though. It is a year round effort.
Breast cancer hits home for too many. Personally, my grandmother on my stepmom’s side suffered from the effects of breast cancer. It was a hard thing for our family and gave me the desire even more to make sure I went to my annual checkups. Now that I’m 40, I am going to schedule a mammogram as well. I want to do everything I can to protect myself and others from breast cancer and part of the way of doing that is by spreading the word. I would also like to support someone with cancer by offering guidance and donating to different charitable organizations.
Since its founding in 1982, Susan G. Komen has been on the frontlines of the fight against breast cancer to save lives. Susan G. Komen’s efforts include the following:
- Conducting breakthrough research to understand, prevent, and treat breast cancers
- Performing critical community outreach, which includes:
- Improving access to care for low-income and uninsured women by conducting breakthrough research to understand, prevent, and treat breast cancer
- Providing free or low-cost screenings and diagnostic services
- Funding to offset the cost of life-saving breast cancer treatments to those who can’t afford it, or funding to provide free transportation and child care for those needing help going through treatment
- Offering guidance to the newly diagnosed or long-term breast cancer patients needing resources and information as they navigate important decisions
- Advocating for public policy to fund lifesaving research and provide patient support
- Focusing on patient care to ensure that all people have access to quality screening, diagnosis, and treatment
Through all of these approaches, Susan G. Komen helps to fight breast cancer along all stages. For example, the organization helps women get screened in order to find breast cancer earlier, as well as helps those diagnosed understand their treatment options. Plus, the organization supports patients in coping with the physical and emotional impact of the disease and offers free or reduced resources to help every step of the way. Last but not least, Susan G. Komen is working hard to find critical breakthroughs in breast cancer. This includes what causes breast cancer, how it can be detected earlier, and treated successfully. As I said earlier, Susan G. Komen is truly an amazing organization!
Since Susan G. Komen was founded, the organization has invested more than $988 million in breakthrough research, and more than $2.3 billion on community health, education and advocacy, helping people in about 60 countries. The organization’s efforts have also helped reduce breast cancer mortality in the United States by 40% between 1989 and 2016 (the last year for which data is available). How awesome is that??!!! Susan G. Komen has even set a new goal to reduce the current number of breast cancer deaths by 50% in the United States by 2026!

Several of my relatives have dealt with breast cancer and it is such a terrible disease. Awareness and research for it are causes close to my heart.
Breast cancer is a cause near and dear to my heart. I have lost several of my relatives to it.
Breast cancer is an awful diagnosis and I agree it deserves year-round attention. I’ve heard that they are super close to finding a cure. That would be amazing.

Breast cancer awareness is something that all women need to mindful of. I agree that it needs to be year round and not just one month of the year.
You just reminded me that I need to have a mammogram. I was on top of it entirely about a year ago and then just keep getting too busy to schedule which is stupid. Must do this in the morning. Thanks for the reminder.
My sister-in-law has breast cancer and is currently going through radiation therapy (she already went through chemo). It’s so important to do the recommended checkups so you can detect breast cancer early and get it treated asap.

I love that there is a whole month for this. It’s something that should really be discussed. I believe that we should all make sure to know more about breast cancer awareness.
Breast Cancer Awareness should be a year long commitment. It should not just be one time! We should empower women to speak and be aware about it.

My grandmother died from breast cancer. I would really like to see m ore people celebrate how far we have come on our research of it.
YES! I agree that the things that are most important to us should be given effort year round. Cancer doesn’t wait until cancer awareness month.

This is really important to be aware. we had a morning tea at work the other day for breast cancer awareness month and we all had to wear something pink.
It is good to be aware about things throughout the year. Most of us have been affected by breast cancer and it is good to support this cause when we can.
A year-round effort for such a great cause really amazing. More people know and become aware more the benefits they get.
This cause is so dear to my heart, because I have lost my mother to breast cancer. I have two cousins who are both Breast CA survivors now for more than 5 years. Regular screening and raising awareness for breast cancer is very important.
My mother’s in law lost her sister to breast cancer. I think the early detection of breast cancer is very important. Regular screening will be useful.
Susan G. Komen is such a great organization. More powers to them, I’ll pray that they’d succeed with their campaigns.
