This is essentially a junior safari, and one that helps you to acclimatize to the terrain and the demands of the great outdoors before visiting larger sites. Below, we’ll take a look at Lake Manyara and ask why it’s such a popular location amongst global travelers.

Where is Lake Manyara and What Does it Look Like?

Lake Manyara is located in the Northern Circuit of Tanzania, which remains one of Africa’s prime and most unique safari destinations.

The natural beauty found within the region is certainly second to none, with the area covering 330 square kilometres of unspoiled wilderness and stunning terrain.

Although this makes it one of the smallest safari parks in Africa, it’s home to an impressive 11 ecosystems and offers a huge number of experiences to people who want to explore exotic wildlife and the great outdoors. Travel with South Africa luxury train journeys to see all the beauty South Africa has to offer.

The diversity of terrain and wildlife here can also be attributed to its varying altitude, which ranges from 953 metres to a staggering 1,445 metres.

Why is Lake Manyara Ideal for Novice Safari-goers

The relatively compact nature of Lake Manyara also makes it easier to spot wildlife in the region, which more than compensates for the lack of animals and big games that exists in comparison with larger safari locations.

Not only this, but as roughly two-thirds of the park is covered by the idyllic and tranquil link, the majority of the animals can be found congregated in concentrated areas on the shore. This makes for an easy and pleasurable viewing experience, and one that can prepare safari goers for visiting larger locations throughout the region.

In terms of the animals on show, there’s also a diverse range of wildlife available for viewing on the shores of Lake Manyara.

The region is famous for its tree-climbing lions and thousands of flamingos (including pink ones), while it’s also home to elephants, buffalo, water bucks, impale and giraffes. There are small numbers of wildebeests in the park, while warthog, zebra and leopards are also known to congregate by the water.

We’ve also discovered a large population of baboons in Lake Manyara, which ranks among the largest groups in the whole of Africa.

Should you Visit Lake Manyara?

Given this and the fact that you can access both day and night safaris here, it’s easy to understand why Lake Manyara should be so popular amongst visitors.

It’s certainly a viable option for first-time safari goers, while it also represents the ideal starting point for a longer trip to diverse regions like Tanzania.

This is despite its small size and relative lack of big five game, as these factors actually work in favour of the park and contribute to its unique travel appeal.
