When I was growing up, my mom always had S.O.S. pads at the kitchen sink. I remember her and I both scrubbing food off pots, pans and dishes when I was a kid. It worked miracles! Now that I’m a parent myself, it’s hard to believe that S.O.S. Steel Wool Soap Pads are celebrating their 100th anniversary this year!

It’s crazy to think that when S.O.S. pads were introduced, electricity and indoor plumbing were considered luxuries, the Eiffel Tower was the tallest structure in the world, and women didn’t have the right to vote. Woodrow Wilson was President, Charlie Chaplin ruled the cinema and Pablo Picasso was in his prime. An average American home cost around $5,000 – $6,000, while a car cost roughly $300 – $400. The world was certainly a different place.

Yet 100 years later, S.O.S pads remain a cleaning staple for millions of people across the country. The same hard working, soap-filled, steel wool scrubbers that everyone’s mom and grandma always had under the sink are still the perfect tool for pots and pans, shower walls, stovetops, patio furniture, outdoor grills – you name it!

HISTORY OF THE S.O.S. SOAP PAD

S.O.S. Soap Pads were developed in 1917 by a cooking utensil salesman named Irwin Cox. These scrubbers were designed to help his customers keep their new pans shiny. Cox’s wife called the pads S.O.S – which stood for “Save Our Saucepans” – and the rest is history. Today, S.O.S Soap Pads are a trusted scrubbing powerhouse for millions of people nationwide, ‘saving’ everything from saucepans to shower walls and stovetops to patio furniture.

When S.O.S pads were introduced, the world was certainly a different place. Electricity and indoor plumbing were still considered luxuries, the Eiffel Tower was the tallest structure in the world, and women didn’t have the right to vote. The trusted method for cleaning pots and pans was to scrub them with squares of cheese cloth or old flour bags, and ‘washstands’ were meant to be cleaned with Borax, ammonia and yellow soap. Housework has come a long way since 1917, yet S.O.S pads remain the number one problem-solver for America’s grungiest jobs.
