Review of Goosebumps

What’s the story: Jack Black stars as acclaimed Goosebumps writer R.L. Stine in this adaptation of the popular Goosebump book series for young adults. In the movie, a teenager named Zach (Dylan Minnette) reluctantly moves from New York City to the quiet town of Madison, Delaware. There, he quickly discovers that his reclusive new neighbor is the horror author of the Goosebump series. Zach learns Stine’s identity when he’s drawn to the writer’s daughter Hannah (Odeya Rush), but soon discovers the dangerous secret inside their home – the creatures from Stine’s famous stories are real and are kept locked away inside the original manuscripts. After an accident frees the monsters, Zach, Hannah and their nerdy pal Champ (Ryan Lee) must work together with Stine to save their town from destruction.

What parents may like about this movie: The movie had a lot of funny parts in it, as well as made us jump a few times. I actually think parts of the movie scared me more than the kids because of some of my own childhood fears. We all agreed that the zombies were pretty freaky! Black, Minnette, Rush and Lee all did a fabulous job playing their parts in the movie.

What kids will like: Our kids really liked that parts of the books they read were incorporated into the movie! Their favorite characters were R.L. Stine and Hannah. The scariest characters were the zombies, Slappy and the clown.

Violence / Scare Factor: There are some pretty scary parts (like with the zombies in the cemetery) as well as burning of books. Other scary scenes includes a gnome throwing a knife and psycho poodle attacking a woman (not shown but implied). There is no blood.

Positive themes: Learning to work as a team to help the greater good (to save the town from the characters). Helping other (i.e. when Zach thinks Hannah is in trouble and runs over to help).

Sex/Romance: A few kisses on the lips, but nothing major.

Bad language: If there was any, I didn’t notice it.
