Our kids enjoy reading and the summertime gives them plenty of time to get some good reading in.  But realistically, this just doesn’t happen.  There are video games, board games, swim time and other activities that keep them busy throughout the summer.   I remember the first day of summer when I was a kid and reading was the last thing on my mind.  What got me reading during the summer was a fun summer reading program offered through our local library.  They offered treats and prizes as you read a set number of books and then a grand prize at the end (usually a brand new book we got to pick from the library).

Our kids aren’t any different.  They are more likely going to read if it involves fun and rewards!  Thanks to Scholastic, we made that happen with a fun Summer Reading Under the Stars Event.  Scholastic sent us a bunch of goodies, including Scholastic books, EVEREADY® flashlights and batteries, as well as some fun activity guides and certificates.  The kids had a blast during our Reading Under the Stars party!  They thought it was so cool that they were allowed to read their books with flashlights.  I have to admit that even I read my books once or twice in the dark using a flashlight when I was a kid!

Maggie McGuire, VP of Parents & Kids Channels at Scholastic describes the importance of reading perfectly when she says, “Now more than ever, summer reading is a priority for all kids so that they don’t fall behind and lose core skills.”  “Our free summer reading resources are designed to help parents keep the joy in reading, make it easy to find books kids will love and encourage kids to read more by participating in our global campaign to break the world record for summer reading.”

A big thanks to Scholastic and EVEREADY® for sending the books and goodies for us to enjoy in our home this summer!

  1. We always order from the Scholastic forms throughout the year but at the end of the year we load up with a few extras. We keep an incentive chart.

  2. My son is allowed to pick out X amount of books each night for us to read to him (the number changes each night, depending on time.) He can also choose one book to read himself. He loves books!

  3. My kids belonged to a summer reading club and read tons of books during July. the club is over now and they’re still reading. They love to read books about super heroes and Pinkilicious.

  4. Scholastic is such a great company! I can’t wait for my daughter to be in school so we can order books through them. I remember being in school and always circling all the books I wanted my mom to order me!

  5. I find it so hard to find time to make reading fun in the Summer, the colder months are easier because everything slows down and we’re stuck inside. My kids will love the idea of sitting outside with a flashlight reading though 🙂

  6. I gave a reading light to my Hubs niece. Her mom wasn’t too happy because she doesn’t want her staying up late and reading… They have to have their lights out in their bedrooms at a certain time.

  7. It’s really cool you mentioned this Scholastic Reading Under the Stars event! I actually heard about this just recently. It looks like your kids had a really good time. I know I am looking forward to receiving my prize from @ScholasticInc for their #summerreadingselfie contest they had.

I loved the Scholastic book fairs that would come around during the school year. I’d save up money in order to buy all the Goosebumps books! I can’t wait until I have children to get them involved in reading.

  8. Reading incentives are a good excuse to get the kiddos reading. I always like the ideas Scholastic comes up with…I’ve been a fan since I was in school (and trust me, that’s been awhile). 😉

  9. Every time I see the word Scholastic, I think of those book order forms we used to be sent home with in school. I always begged to order 2-3 books from each one!

  10. My babies are total bookworms! At any given time, I can find them in a corner somewhere with a book. My son’s favorite Scholastic book now is called The Night Before Kindergarten.

  11. My kids sign up for the summer reading challenge at the library every year. They offer small incentives so the kids look forward to continuous reading all summer long, thanks to that program.

  12. I used to love reading Scholastic books when I was younger. Wish my kids could have taken part in this program too!
