Over the past few months, I had the opportunity to serve as a Power of Family Meals Blog Ambassador for an awesome campaign called “Disconnect to Reconnect” with the J.M. Smucker Company.  With a career in social media, I am constantly online working.  My work ranges from writing and responding to emails, posting photos on Instagram, checking in on Foursquare, tweeting on Twitter, writing blog posts and more.  If I am away from my computer, I have my phone in my hand.

When I took the Disconnect to Reconnect Pledge, I was nervous in the beginning.  I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to do it.  But let me tell you.  I am so glad I did do it!  I felt like without technology at the table, I was 100% there in our family’s conversations and I’ve found my relationship with our kids growing (even over the past few months).  I am getting more hugs and more “I love you’s” than before.  I am so glad I made the pledge and have made a difference in our family’s life.

Let me tell you about the Disconnect to Reconnect Pledge.  We all know that family dinners are more than just eating – it’s time when we can connect with our family.  However, this time can be easily hindered by technology.  That’s why Power of Family Meals is proposing that families Disconnect to Reconnect.

Disconnect to Reconnect is a movement to get families to unplug at the table.  Power of Family Meals is encouraging families to gather around the table for meals each Sunday without screens (phones, TV, iPad, hand-held devices).  As technology becomes more predominant in our lives with busy lifestyles often forcing in a variety of directions, meals around the table begin to offer that precious time for families to reconnect.  It will continue to become more important to set boundaries for digital detoxing, so why not start now?  Family meals are definitely a tradition worth maintaining.

  1. Today I took the pledge to Disconnect to Reconnect. It is important for the family to eat dinner together and to connect and turn off all devices!

  2. We don’t have kids and have always sat and talked during meals, so I don’t really have to take this pledge, but I do wish my sister and brothers and their families would, so I’ll pass this on to them.

  3. It is amazing how so many of us get caught up in using technology during dinner time. I am taking the pledge to disconnect to reconnect. I think it is a great idea! Thanks for the info.

  4. What a fun little giveaway! I love the idea behind this! I find it hard as a freelance to be done…if I worked 8-5 I would be done at 5…but being in charge of my own schedule makes it hard to stop sometimes.

  5. I have not taken the pledge yet, but this is something i agree should be done at my house as well. I have noticed the times we eat out or are at a family member’s house who does not allow technology when eating dinner, in the attention paid to others and the stories that can be passed around.

  6. I took the pledge, and quite frankly that’s always been the rule in our house! There are NO electronics at our table EVER…not even for my hubby’s work!

  7. I did. We eat all meals with no electronic gadgets. We occasionally have a movie night while eating dinner though,

  9. No because I’m single so no need to disconnect. I would though if I had a family, mine always talked at dinner and I would not allow phones at the dinner table.

  10. I do not have any children. But I am an Auntie to a wonderful niece & 2 nephews. 🙂 I will pass this along to my sister. Thank u for the chance to win. 🙂

  11. we do our best, my husband is the manager of 5 hospital clinics so its hard for him to put his electronics away but we do our best 🙂
