  1. I keep an emergency bag in my back seat with water, granola bars, sweat shirts, and blankets. Three years ago we were on our way to the Seattle airport and a blizzard hit we were stuck on the freeway for 8 hours—my emergency bag saved the day.

  2. I always make sure everything is adjusted before I start out on the road. I check my mirrors, seat, make sure all of the belongings are secured, and make sure I have clear line of sight. I also check my tires regularly in the winter months, and make sure to do things like lock the doors before I set off.

  4. In the winter, we make sure we have a full tank … not only does it ensure that we can get home when traffic is moving slowly, the added weight helps to keep us on the road (instead of sliding off of it).

  5. I always carry an emergency kit which includes a blanket, extra jacket, water and some snacks, specially in the winter it is very important

  6. since I live in the Bay Area with some scary drivers, I drive extremely alert and keep distance from all the crazies

  7. In Colorado a winter safety tip would be to slow down because you need to be prepared to hit what we call “Black Ice”. It will really fool you here. You don’t see it, the roads can look like normal black pavement, but have a very thin ice sheet built up on it, and throw you off the road or into another lane if you are going too fast. You always need to leave more stopping room in winter here. I think the greatest number of accidents here in winter are rear-enders.

  8. i keep a blanket on the back seat and kitty litter in the trunk during the winter months 🙂

  10. I do my best to keep my phone fully charged and always drive at a speed I am comfortable with even if that means it will annoy the people behind me and take me longer to get where I am going.

  11. We always have blankets in the car for cold weather. You never know when you might get stuck and you don’t want to freeze.

  12. keep anti-freeze in your car, and Don’t drive if you don’t have too, or don’t have the experience.

( you seem to have two mandatory entries here…. I suppose one of them is inncorrect but I’ll go ahead and tell you that I like the Ice Cream Parlor Play Food Set by Melissa & Doug, It’s so creative and I would have loved playing with it as a child)

    keelagodrino(at)gmail.com

  13. Don’t pass snow plows and sanding trucks. I live in Northern MN and they are out on the roads daily. If you try and pass you are gonna find the road in front of them worse than the road behind. Be patient and give your self more time based on the road conditions.

  14. 4×4’s don’t work by magic which is why there are a lot of accidents with them in the winter–people have no idea how to drive them. When going into a slide, give it some gas which will straighten the vehicle out. Of course, 4×4’s don’t work on ice at all.

  15. I invest in regular preventive maintenance to make sure my car is always in good condition to be driving on winter roads. And, from Melissa and Doug, I’d love to have the 100 piece colored wooden blocks!

  16. We always take a packed bag with extra clothes, toiletries, food, etc. whenever we go out of town even for a short couple hour trip. You never know when you might get stuck somewhere.

  17. I live in Texas. The only specifc winter “driving” tip is NOT to drive if there is ice on the road–actually, that would be my tip for any part of the country. No one can predict how an ice patch will affect the control of your car. While a good driver can probably steer out of it, again, you can’t predict what will be in your path. I can’t afford to have my car messed up–much less have myself or someone else injured. Very, very few people need to be out driving in such conditions.

  18. I always make sure ALL the ice & snow is removed from the vehicle BEFORE I leave my driveway. I only wish other drivers would do the same!!

  19. i use a snow scraper and brush and clean off my windows and lights. I do try to get as much snow off the body of my jeep as possible. this was one of the first tips that midas had for winter driving.

  20. Snowflake07 (Audra)

My Winter safety tip is to have a fully charged cell phone with you while driving. If you do happen to get stuck in the middle of nowhere in bad weather, you want to be able to call someone for help.

  21. I make sure there is a bag of Kitty Litter in the truck of my car…it helps with the weight and also around the tires for traction

    pattifritz2000 at yahoo dot com
    thanks for the chance

  22. I make sure to use a windshield washer fluid with an anti-freeze so it doesnt freeze up. Nothing worse than not being able to see out the windshield! Thanks!
    jackievillano at gmail dot com

  23. With all the snow we’ve had this winter my biggest tip is to use extreme caution when pulling out of a street or driveway. The snowbanks are plowed so high that you can’t see oncoming traffic until you are already in the road.
    Thanks for the giveaway!
    hondaray6 at hotmail dot com

  24. When the streets are covered with snow, I leave lots of room between myself and the car ahead of me, because it takes a lot more time to stop on a snow-covered street. Thank you for the chance to win.

  25. So many of the problems I see in bad weather stem from people driving too fast. My tip for everyone is to exercise common sense and slow down no matter what kind of vehicle you drive. I also carry kity litter in my car in case I get stuck in snow or mud.

  26. How appropriate today. The roads are horrible! I refuse to answer the cell phone if the roads are bad. I also make sure I leave plenty of time to get to and from where I need to be.

  28. Make sure you have a Winter Survival Pack in your car! It should have at least one blanket in one of those giant Ziploc bags and snacks (like trail mix for energy).

  29. My tip for driving in the winter is to make sure u have something warm, like a blanket or extra coat, and some water and snacks. We recently had to drive in the snow to get to a doctors appt, and ended up running off the interstate and in the ditch! It was super scary, but we got lucky and the car still ran. We did have our blanket and water though, just in case! This car kit would be nice to have!

  30. Interesting 2nd mandatory for a car oriented giveaway, but if it is really meant for this one–I like the Grub Sprouts Sprinkler.

  31. When driving in snow, I’m always prepared for anything and I totally focus (no radio, no conversation with the kids, etc) and I make sure to drive a consistent speed…no sudden stops or turns if not necessary!

  32. I don’t have a tip for winter driving because I hate it so much. What I do is totally ignore the idiots who refuse to slow down on dangerously slick roads. I go the speed I think is safe and to heck with them. I do keep a blanket, water, and even a bag of ice melt product in my car in the winter.

    dchrisg3 @ gmail . com

  33. I live in MN so I’ve got some experience on icy roads. I’d say the best tip is to never take your eyes off of the road. Always be watching for an icy spot, a snow drift, or slippery intersections. Be vigilant!

    coriwestphal at msn dot com

  34. When driving during the winter, especially on long trips on icy roads, I always carry candles in the car. If I become stuck, the candles would provide enough heat to prevent freezing. 🙂 Thank you.

  35. A winter safety tip I use is to drive into a skid if I start to slip on icy roads. I like the Wooden Railway Train Set by Melissa & Doug toy.

  36. My tip is to always have at least a half tank of gas. If you get stuck on the road in the winter, you want to be able to run your car so you don’t freeze!

  37. During the winter months we always carry non perishable food water and blankets in our vehicles just in case.

    jweezie43[at]gmail[dot]com

  38. michelle robbins

Leave plenty of time. Leave lots of space between me and cars in front of me. Keep warm clothes and boots in the car.

  39. My winter tip would be to always have blankets in the trunk! Those “hot hands” packets would be a good thing to have on hand too in case of emergency!

Thank you for the chance to win!!

    ajoebloe(at)gmail(dot)com

  40. My tip is to keep blankets in your car in case y9ou break down and need to keep warm.

    txhottie_86 at yahoo dot com

  41. Leave plenty of space between you and vehicle in front of you and drive at off times to avoid lots of other vehicles during treacherous weather.

  42. I always back a bag and keep it in my trunk right before cold weather comes with a couple of blankets some munchies, a charged phone that will get 911 etc. in case I get stuck or are in a traffic jam

  43. If you have a newer car, don’t pump your brakes if you hit a patch of ice. Most cars have antilock braking systems that will do it for you. (Read your car’s manual to be sure.)

  44. Jeffrey Moraczewski

My winter tip is to always drive with some blankets in ur trunk. You never know when you’ll need them in an emergency

  45. Silly rule, but CLEAN the snow off of your winders before you drive. You would not believe the accident by my home this past winter (running through a red light) because the driver could not see that the light was red…. many injuries in this accident.

  46. My girls would love the Decorate Your Own Heart Chest Wooden Craft Kit for Kids by Melissa and Doug! They are very crafty!

  47. leave more distance between you and the car ahead of you when the roads aren’t clear as your stopping distance will be increased.
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  48. not sure why you want a gummylump comment on a midas giveaway, but the Automoblox C9R Sportscar Red & Black Wooden Car Full Size is cute!

  49. My winter safety tip I always follow is to drive a speed im comfortable with to keep me calm and safe and not worry about everyone elses agenda!

  50. When rain hits our area, drive at a slower speed, especially if vision is impaired in a downpour. Better safe than sorry

  51. When driving, slow down to the speed that makes driving safe for the conditions, even if others on the road are driving as if it’s still warm and bone dry

  52. Thanks for the giveaway…my winter driving tip is to carry a bucket / bag of sand & a shovel in your trunk just in case your car gets stuck in snow or ice !

    senorpiero [at] yahoo [dot] com

  53. Our kids had an easel when they were younger, like the Melissa & Doug Wooden Floor Easel, and they would spend literally hours drawing pictures with it !

  54. A winter safety tip when driving would be to take your time and also to bring items in case you break down like decent shoes to walk in, a heavier coat, cell phone, whatever…
