As we entered the back-t0-school season not long ago, many of us started thinking about the fond memories of back-to-school traditions from our childhood that we may have experienced.  I remember walking to school every day (unless it was raining) and catching up to friends and neighbors on my way to school.  I remember how energized I felt when I arrived to the school.  I remember running my energy off on the way home after school.

During October, we celebrated International Walk to School Month!  The makers of Green Works naturally derived cleaners created a fun Web site that helps families get involved in that daily trek to school – and many were able to win some green for their school!

During the month of October, elementary and middle school students and their families helped their schools win one of five $5,000 grants – simply by walking or bicycling to school.  Parents participated by signing up online for the Walk to School Challenge and logging their families’ walking or bicycling trips on behalf of their school.  The five schools with the highest levels of participate were then eligible to win one of the $5,000 grants.  Plus, frequent walkers and bicyclists also had the opportunity to earn individual prizes, which ranged from green shoelaces to reusable water bottles.

Although October is over, you can still participate in the Walk to School Challenge in your homes.  This comes at a time where there is increased attention to the sedentary lifestyle of both adults and children throughout America.  Walking and bicycling to school provides an easy way for many families to take a step towards more physical activity in their everday routine – and a more natural lifestyle.

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Clorox Green Works and received a $20 thank-you gift certificate.
