5 Ways to Stay Warm Outside This Winter

Today, on Redhead Mom, I’m writing this post about how to stay warm outside this winter in partnership with hatattack.

stay warm outside in cold weather during winter

Winter is here and it’s cold outside! Whether you have snow or rain (or neither), not preparing for the cold outside can leave you miserable and uncomfortable. Maybe you work outside or you go outside when you run errands, but it’s still important to feel comfortable and warm. As a fourth grade teacher, I’m not only an educator in the classroom, but I am also the PE teacher. That means my students and I are outside for at least thirty minutes each day. If it’s cold and I’m not prepared, it’s no fun at all so we need to go inside where there is warm and the thermometer works, so all we need is to convert 37.4 celsius to fahrenheit to find out what temperature we are on! Here are five ways to stay warm outside this winter.

Down Jacket

One major way to stay warm outside this winter is by wearing a good, heavy jacket. I like to wear down jackets because they are comfortable and keep me warm. When buying a down jacket, you can either choose a lightweight or heavy one. Lightweight down jackets are good because they are compressible and won’t make you overheat if you’re moving around and exerting energy outdoors. If you’re spending more time on the sidelines or you aren’t exerting energy, a heavier down jacket may make more sense.

Beanies

Did you know that your head is one of the body parts with a higher heat loss? Wearing a beanie outside is a great way to stay warm during the winter. Having a close knit and snug fit are key features you want in a beanie. If you are in really cold temperatures, you’ll want to have a beanie that has a secondary lining made from soft merino, fleece, or shearling. Plus, make sure the fit covers your ears fully. There are a lot of options to choose from when it comes to purchasing beanies for women. Just like with the gloves, it’s a good idea to carry an extra beanie with you.

Gloves

Another way to stay warm outside in the winter is by wearing a good pair of gloves. The best type of gloves for the cold outside are those made of wool, leather or synthetic material with insulating properties. If it’s wet outside, gloves can get wet and that will defeat the purpose of staying warm. If you know it’s going to be wet outside, be sure to have a pair of waterproof gloves. Another good idea is to have an extra pair of gloves with you in case the ones you’re wearing get wet.

Layer

When I lived in the snow, I was really good at layering! Why layer? When you layer your clothes, it’s easy to adjust to the level of comfort you want given differing temperatures. If you’re cold, you add more layers. If you get warm, you start removing layers. Whether it’s layering a shirt under a sweatshirt under a jacket or layering thermal pants under jeans under outdoor pants, layering is a great way to stay warm outside this winter.

Move Around

A good way to stay warm outside during the winter is by moving around. Whether you are walking around or doing jumping jacks (depending on the weather and if they’re are slippery conditions or not), getting your body moving can help warm you up. As you move around, your body burns energy and is expelled as heat. Be aware of the conditions outside when you’re moving around, preventing the possibility of slipping or falling.

What are some of the ways you keep warm outside during the winter?

  1. I am always cold in the winter here in Upstate NY. I would also recommended electronic heat! There are rechargable hand warmers, vests with heated panels, and other heated clothing. I also got my daughter a little heated block on a lanyard that she can take to school with her.
