Living here on the California Central Coast, my family has become very aware of water safety. Whether it’s at the beach, in a lake or at the pool, having confident swimmers can make both kids and parents feel more at ease and safe. As a mother, I will say that it took a lot of patience and practice to teach my children how to swim. Every child learns in different ways and different paces, but it is possible. Check out these 5 Ways to Build a Confident Swimmer.

1 – Set rules and guidelines. Whenever we take our kids, nieces, or their friends, we always set rules and guidelines before they get in the water. These could include, but are not limited to not running around the pool, staying in the shallow end or not rough housing in the water.

2 – Get in the water a lot! One of the big things about building a confident swimmer is teaching them to be safe and feel comfortable in the water. The more they are in the water, the more comfortable and confident they will become. Therefore, you may have to bring them regularly to a community pool or the beach. Alternatively, you may consider seeking residential custom pool contracting services to build an inground pool installation in your property. You may also install a pool heater to make your kids feel more relaxed while practicing their swimming skills. Call on a pool heater repair technician if your pool heater stops functioning properly.

3 – Sign your child up for swimming lessons. Each of our kids were signed up for swim lessons when possible. Some had more swimming lessons than others, but as parents, we were involved in helping to teach them to swim and build their confidence as swimmers.

4 – Don’t leave your child alone in the pool. One of the biggest things is DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CHILD ALONE IN THE POOL. It only takes a few seconds for your child to drown and none of us as parents want that to happen. Always make sure your children are supervised when it comes to water safety.

5 – Use water safety products. When you have a child who doesn’t know how to swim yet and isn’t confident in the water yet, you’ll want to use water safety products from SwimWays. We recently received the SwimWays Power Swimr and I think it’s a great water safety product!

SwimWays is a leader in helping children learn to swim and promoting water safety as evidenced by the 6th Annual National Learn to Swim Day that took place on May 20th, 2017. With SwimWays, you’ll find different levels of products that are based on the child‘s swimming abilities – Levels 1-3.

Swim Step 1

Swim Step 1 focuses on Water Introduction. With the Swim Step One products. your baby is introduced to the water comfortably and securely in a SwimWays baby float.

Swim Step 2

Swim Step 2 focuses on Water Exploration. With the Swim Step Two products, your child is provided the support that he or she needs to feel more confident as they explore the water in a Step 2 Swim Sweater or Swim Vest. This is the perfect support they need while learning to balance and paddle – important when it comes to pre-swimming skills.

The SwimWays Swim Sweater helps kids explore the water with confidence. 50 years ago, the stable, circular torso design was introduced and rides the child‘s chest for extra stability. There are two pre-swimming positions – upward and forward stroke. Sun sleeves add extra UV protection.

The SwimWays Swim Vest is made with sturdy foam inserts that provide balanced flotation. It has a front zipper with safety closure making it easy to go on and off. It provides UPF 50+ sun protection.

Swim Step 3

Swim Step 3 focuses on Swim Training. With the Swim Step Three products, your child is almost ready to swim on his or her own. SwimWays graduated swim training vests are like training wheels for the water! You simply add or remove the flotation pads to adjust the level of support your child needs. This graduated support gives parents a swim training system with all the tools kids will need to feel empowered and confident in the water.

The SwimWays Power Swimr gives confidence to swimmers and is essentially like training wheels for the pool. It includes adjustable cords and a support strap for a snug fit. It includes 9 removable floats that allow the Power Swimr to adjust to your child‘s swimming ability. This form of graduated floatation advances swimming ability at the child‘s own pace.

I love the SwimWays products and how they help our children to become more confident in swimming by advancing to different steps in the water. When Ashlynne was little, she was introduced to the water with the SwimWays Baby Spring Float, which helped her get used to the water. Not only did she have fun in it, but she also became more confident and comfortable when in the pool. We then moved on to the SwimWays Swim Vest, followed by advancing to the SwimWays Power Swimr.

We definitely noticed an improvement in swimming once we incorporated the SwimWays Swim Step 3 into Ashlynne’s swim routine. We highly recommend SwimWays products to anyone who wants to help their child feel safe, confident and comfortable in the water.

I think the best advice is to never leave a child unattended even if they have swim vests on. My grandchildren love the water. Although they are not strong swimmers yet, they will be taking swim lessons this summer. I think that swim vest is good to have. I will get one for each of my grandkids and keep an eye on them while they enjoy the pool.

  10. Sarah Bailey says:

I have always been a huge fan of swimming, though my parents were never keen, it is most definitely important to try and make sure kids are confident in the water.

  11. Jennifer Van Huss says:

This is a great list of rules! My parents own a pool so my kids are VERY familiar with these rules. WE enroll them in swimming lessons every summer and use Swimways when they aren’t strong swimmers! What I love about swimways is that they are non restrictive and allow kids to practice their swimming!

  12. Jeanette says:

We had our kiddo in swimming lessons at a young age and now he LOVES to swim and I am not sweating it out.

  13. Paula Schuck says:

My kids have done swimming lessons for many years. We started them as babies. It is smart advice here. Never leave them alone or let them out of your sight. Also products like SwimWays are great to help them get used to swimming. I could use some of these for my niece and nephews though for sure.

  14. Claudia Krusch says:

Awesome list of rules. In addition to not leaving your children alone, I would also add never turn your back when kids are near the water. I love the vests versus the traditional float wings, because they allow a child to feel independent.

We have a SwimWays float for my granddaughter. She loves being in the water.

  20. Eloise says:

these are great tips (all of them!) My kids have gone to swimming lessons and have been exposed to the water quite a bit… it’s very important how to teach children not to panic but stay relaxed in the water and to FLOAT! my kids and I reside in MN (the land of 10,000 lakes) it’s a must to teach them young!

  21. I think swimwear like this goes a long way towards promoting confidence in the swimming pool. If they feel like they are not going to sink, then they are more confident to swim.

Growing up, I was far from a confident swimmer. I am so glad my parents pushed me and enrolled me in swimming lessons!

  34. Rosey says:

That’s a great product! My granddaughter has just learned to swim without the floaties. She’s four so we are extra extra careful with her in the water always. Rules are def. issued every trip, and getting in the water often is a good one to do too!.
