Recycling, carpooling, community cleanup, saving water – these are all ways we strive to help the environment and our community, but do we really think about how we can help by saving energy? I remember growing up in California and being encouraged by my parents to “turn the lights off.” I never really thought about why I would do that, but just did it. Now that I’m a grownup, I understand it better. Get the best electricity rates Alberta in five minutes online.

First off, it cuts down on your Electric bill –  a huge savings in your monthly budget! Secondly, it helps the environment. So now that we have the intention to save money and help the environment, where do we go from there? Energy Upgrade California encourages us all to make small changes, which will result in big things!

7 Ways to Save Energy at Home

1 – Turn the lights off. I can’t tell you how many times as a parent I have to remind our kids (and yes, even myself) to turn the lights off. This mainly applies if you aren’t using the room the lights are in or you leave the house. I typically have 1 or 2 lights on, but definitely not all of the lights. Then if you’re keen on embracing a more environmentally-conscious lifestyle, a shower timer is an excellent place to start. Check out this fantastic 5-minute shower timer with white sand to help you monitor your water usage while reducing energy consumption.

2 – Open the doors and windows. We live on the Central Coast and are lucky enough to enjoy beautiful weather throughout the year. In fact, we don’t even have an air conditioner. If you are able to, try to open the windows and doors (screens help keep bugs and animals out) instead of turning on the air conditioner. If you live somewhere that requires the use of an air conditioner, be sure to keep the thermostat at a reasonable temperature and turn it down when you’re not home.

3 – Take advantage of full loads. In our home, I wait to wash and dry clothes or wash dishes until the loads are full. This is a really great way to save energy and money!

4 – Use cold water. When possible, use cold water in your washer loads. This can save a good amount of energy!

5 – Upgrade to LED lights throughout your home. I wanna say it was a few years ago and upgrading to LED lights became a thing. It really does help save energy and money by doing so. If you haven’t done so yet, I encourage you to upgrade your light bulbs to LED. If you need help installing new wiring and fixtures, visit suburbanenterprises.com/electric.

6 – Upgrade your appliances. These days, there are so many appliances available out there that are energy efficient. This can cut down big time on your electric bill because they don’t use as much energy as the old school ones did. Afterwards, appliances like ac units need to be regularly serviced by an air conditioning services contractor to maintain their energy-efficiency. You might not always know if you’re due for regular maintenance, and how much time or use you should let go by before requesting it again. Ask your air conditioning service that question and see what they think, as the condition and age of your unit will be a factor to consider. If you are strongly considering replacing your old ac units, make sure to get an energy-efficient ac installation.

7 – Get everyone on board. As a parent, it’s important to get your family on board to save energy in your home. Not only is it better for the environment, but it can leave your family with more spending money to do things together! Don’t just tell your kids to turn off the lights, but explain to them why it’s important to do so.
