RV Camping at Refugio State Beach, California

We love to go RV camping in our family! In our RV, we can travel to different places and feel really comfortable while doing it.  The kids love traveling in the RV because it has a bathroom, a kitchen, TVs and fun places to sleep and hang out! I love traveling in the RV because it has a bathroom (so, so important), a kitchen (complete with a sink, stove, microwave and refrigerator – oh yeah!), TVs and our own bedroom and bathroom entrance for me and Frank. We also want to try camper trailers on our next camping trip.

In August, we headed to Refugio State Beach for some fun RV camping on the weekend. Frank called a few weeks ahead of time and was able to make a reservation in the highly booked campground. After camping there, we know why it is so popular and hard to get a spot at. While it was definitely a challenge pulling our RV into the spot (not set up like most RV parks), it was a gorgeous location and had cell phone service. Now, I say cell phone service because the majority of our family enjoy playing Pokemon Go and Refugio State Beach has some great Pokemon that spawn in! The first night we were there, our four boys and I went down to the beach and got some really good Pokemon! Ok, so back to the camping.

When we pulled into our RV spot, it was still light out. After setting the RV up (i.e. opening up the RV with more room with the slide out sections), I made spaghetti and curly noodles with Caesar Salad and we enjoyed eating it around our campfire. Many campgrounds don’t let you use wood burning fires, so we invested in a propane fire pit and it’s awesome! We’ve received a lot of interest and complements on it and a lot of people asking where they can get one. At Refugio State Beach Campground, you CAN have wood burning fires. In fact, they have a fire pit for fires and you can even buy wood from the camp host! You can also call for propane gas refilling services if your propane tank is out of gas and while you’re refilling the one in the RV you should also consider getting a residential propane tank refill for your home so when you get back you have enough gas to cook.

There is something important to note about the Refugio State Beach Campground. There are no hook-ups for your RV (i.e. water, electricity, sewer). If you have an RV, you will NOT be able to run your generator at night. In fact, Quiet Hours are from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and generators can ONLY be operated between the hours of 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. So there was no movie night in our RV at this campground, which meant for an early bedtime and early wake-up time (yep! No sleeping in while camping – ha ha!). But how does a generator work? Diesel generators are machines that produce electricity by burning diesel fuels. The next morning, as soon as we could start the generator up, I started making breakfast. We love to make eggs, sausages and hash browns when we’re camping. In addition to eggs, sausage and hash browns, the kids each got their own cup of hot cocoa with whipped cream.

After eating breakfast and cleaning up the dishes, the kids got on their bikes and rode around the campground. After the kids rode their bikes around the campsite, we went on a family bike ride on some of their bike trails and it was so much fun! When we got back to the campsite after our bike ride, we headed to the beach, which was very close by.

Down on the beach, we brought snacks and drinks and set up this awesome cabana that Frank ordered online. It is seriously awesome! In fact, it’s so awesome that we ordered a second one after our camping trip! This is so we can put them together and all of us can fit underneath in the shade with the camping chairs. The beach is a great place to hang out. Not only is it a sandy beach, but there are also some great rocks to built rock statues! The kids enjoyed going on an adventure and found some caves and tide pools. Dallen came back early and had a blast building his own rock statue and flying a kite. Frank even flew the kite some, too! Dallen really enjoyed flying the kite with him.

That night, after dinner, we celebrated Ian’s 12th birthday with a Chocolate Cake and gift. He loved it! We even shared some cake with our neighbors (who were super sweet helping us pull into our site and even shared water with us when we ran out of water in our RV. Yes, that’s possible when you’re not hooked up to a water source and are washing dishes like you do at home – ha ha)!

After a long day of fun in the sun, bicycle rides and family fun, we all hit the sack early. We had a great time camping at Refugio State Beach and would totally do it again!
