Exploring Harrison’s Cave in Barbados

On our last cruise, Frank and I traveled to the Caribbean. Our very first stop was Barbados. We were really excited because neither of us had been to the Caribbean before and this was going to be our first time to Barbados. When we got off the ship, we had to take a shuttle into town. From there, we hired a taxi driver to show us around the island and take us to Harrison’s Cave.

Barbados was very humid, but very pretty. I loved the feel of the island and took lots of pictures. Our driver knew a lot about the island and gave us a lot of great information and history about Barbados. It didn’t take long to get to Harrison’s Cave from the port where the ship was.

When we got to the site of Harrison’s Cave, we had to hike down some stairs and a big hill (you know what that means? back up on the way out – ugh) to the ticket booth. There were some gorgeous flowers on the property and signs with information about the land. We purchased tickets for the Tram Tour through Harrison’s Cave. Tickets were $30.30 each for adults and $15.15 each for kids.

The tour was one hour long and was very enjoyable. We spent a lot of the hour on the tram, which was nice, and it was a lot cooler in the cave than outside, but still very humid. Before going on the tour, you’ll want to make sure that you use the bathroom before getting on the tram as there is not a bathroom to use until the tour is over.

Our tour guide was very nice and kept pointing out Frank’s “selfie stick.” The funny thing was that it wasn’t actually a selfie stick, but was our GoPro. She was very sweet and was fun to listen to. In Barbados, tourism is their primary way of earning money, so you’ll want to make sure you give your tour guide a tip at the end if you enjoyed the tour!

Harrison’s Cave is one of Barbados’ Greatest Wonders and is located in the central uplands of Barbados and is a gorgeous attraction with unmatched beauty. It is a massive underground cave stream system, with awesome caverns and breathtaking formations. Within the cave are clear streams and cascading waterfalls. I feel like we got some good shots, but it was very low lighting within the cave (go figure – ha ha)!

Within the cave are walls of crystallized limestone. This cave is brought to life with flowing streams, deep pools of crystal clear water and towering columns. There were beautiful white flow stones and speleothems which adorn the cave. Harrison’s Cave is filled with Stalagmites. How are these stalagmites formed? As rainwater seeps through soil and coral rock above the cave, it dissolves limestone and becomes saturated with the mineral calcite. As this water seeps into the cave, calcite is deposited. The calcite formations growing up from the floor are the stalagmites.

It was a really great tour and we would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Barbados. If we went back, I think we would go on the tour again! So much beauty in one location and a tour for a great price!
