Zombie Run

Last month my friend Melanie, our kids, and I participated in a local 5K…A Zombie Run! Zombie Invasion SLO was such a fun experience; I love themed runs! This 5K was a fundraiser for the Central Coast Autism Spectrum Center – a local charity.

Zombies are horribly dangerous to all human life and zombie infections have the potential to seriously undermine national security. It is advised that you band together with fellow citizens to avoid this terrible plague. You will need to enter Camp San Luis Obispo and walk or run 5K on foot to a secure government location.

Most of our group chose to be zombies while Melanie’s son and his friend were survivors trying to avoid “us.” The kids and I had so much ripping up our clothes, dragging them in the dirt, and spraying them with fake blood. And the make-up…the make-up!!! I looked up how to transform into a zombie on Pinterest and there are so many tutorials. Caitlyn and I practiced the night before and freaked out our friends when I sent them sample pictures so we knew we were on the right track. Melanie, her daughter, and Carter all got their make-up done by the volunteers when we got there. And I must say they did an excellent job as well.

The “survivors” all start off with 3 ribbons. They can choose green, red and/ or yellow. You can choose the same color or a combination of ribbons. Wearing green indicates that they were wiling to run – run away fast from the zombies; yellow meant the zombies had to walk briskly to get their ribbons; and red (mainly for youngsters and/ or the elderly) meant they must be within arms length. These kids had more fun chasing after the survivors trying to gather as many ribbons as they could. I couldn’t stop laughing watching these guys.  At one point a survivor who was trying to get past the kids yelled “look…a cow…”  Simultaneously, the kids all look and the lady ran right past them!  The kids were not amused, but I about fell over laughing.  The kids had so much fun, they had no idea they just ran close to 3 miles!

Within this last year, I’ve had the opportunity to complete a mud run, a turkey trot, a color run, and now a Zombie run. I loved dressing up as a Zombie! This was SO much fun – fun for the whole family. We will definitely be participating in these from now on.
