In our family, we love to go camping!  In fact, we just bought a RV – woo hoo!  We have a favorite campsite in Santa Barbara that we visit on a regular basis and the kids love it because they get to swim, make ice cream sundaes, enjoy s’mores, play in the park and go on hikes. We always bring our red led headlamps whenever we go camping. On our recent trip, I decided to bring some fun crafts to change things up a little bit.  After all, we were camping a little longer than usual with the long holiday weekend.

I found some great crafts at our local Joann’s.  I love that store!  I found some items for $1.00 each and then others I bought as a kit.  The kit included a wooden drawing and then markers to color with.  I bought holiday penguins, elves, horses and a Santa.  The kids enjoyed coloring them!  However, there was one major fail with the Penguin.  You’ll figure it out if you look at the picture close enough (just know that the piece you notice is actually supposed to be what makes the wooden cutout stand upright – lol)!  I even bought some ornament kits the kids will be able to make on our upcoming camping trips!

Other than the wooden coloring kits, I brought Foam Flyer Kits.  We had 7 planes available for the kids (and Frank) to build.  Unfortunately, one of the planes was missing the tail, but I was glad the kids were able to paint them with Frank as I captured them all in pictures.  I would definitely recommend that if you buy these kits, you check to make sure all of the pieces are there and the paint isn’t dried out before you take them on camping trips.  We had that happen on ours and while it made it a little challenging, everyone still had a great time decorating their planes and flying them afterwards!  I’m excited to do some more arts and crafts on our next camping trip!

Do your kids make crafts on camping trips?  What are their favorite crafts to make?

Congratulations on your new RV! These type of crafts are always the most fun and ones that create memories that kids talk about for years.

  20. I so miss watching my kids do crafts. These kids look like they had a great time and they did some really nice things with the individual plains. So cool.

  21. Amanda Love says:

Oh it looks like everyone had such a fun time. We grew up in a big city so never went camping. Would love to one day.

  22. I remember being a little girl going to girl scout camp each year and a LOVED crafting with a group. I try to keep up with my boys crafting, they don’t seem to have the same passion as I do – but it did foster a life long crafting desire in me starting early! 😀 And the boy with the toast ‘burn’ shirt – is hilarious! My 3 boys use that phrase on each other often…I would love to get them one 😀

  23. Freya says:

What a great idea, it looks like it was a real success. Everybody looks like they are having lots of fun.

  24. HilLesha says:

I have been on a camping trip only once and that’s when I was a child. Therefore, my family and I haven’t been camping. However, it would be fun to do someday. I love the idea of making crafts, which my son would really love since he enjoys craft projects.

Bummer on the missing piece, and lol at the penguin. We like to do crafts like this too, and flying them afterwards is def. the best part. 🙂

  31. I’m more than a little jealous of the nice weather there! It’s too cold to camp here until spring. At least for me!

  32. coolchillmom says:

We have never done a full blown camping trip. The kids love the idea of staying in the tent in our garden

  35. Looks like it has been such a fun adventure and activity!

  36. Paula Schuck says:

Inexpensive crafts are in valuable when kids are young. My girls are crazy for crafts. I’ve never heard of this particular store Joanne’s, but I’ll assume that it’s a US store obviously. It sounds great.

  37. Amanda says:

Oh it looks like you had so much fun! I love crafting – and camping for that matter!

  38. Christie says:

We are definite pros to crafting. But I don’t know about the camping part 🙂

Camping is a blast! Especially when you bring things to help keep the kids from getting bored. I know mine love those little wooden pictures that come with the markers too.

  41. Brandy says:

I have not gone camping since being a Mom. That has to change. I love the idea of doing arts and crafts while camping, although we do a lot of that at home, so I think the kids would rather do new things if we go out to camp somewhere. I am loving the photos of your family crafting it up! Perfect family memories!

  42. Amber NElson says:

I think crafts are fun at any age really. I’d have a blast teaching these kids!

  45. Julie Wood says:
