Getting the Most Out of School for Our Kids

I have great memories of my school days. I remember going on field trips and having parties. I remember writing on the chalk board (and then the white board as I went into junior high). I remember the PTA meetings my mom would go to and the events they would put together. Events included Fall Carnivals (I remember the cake walk and Go Fish games with the fishing poles), Halloween Costume Parades, Santa’s Workshop (where we shopped for gifts for our families) and more! There was so much that the PTA did for our schools when I was growing up. Today I look at schools and the lack of funding really affects the lack of events such as the ones I described above. The activities that do happen take place in the classrooms and are made possible by the teachers and parents – both of whom supply the items and funds to make it happen. I wish our kids had the opportunities like I had in school for art, music and more.

I completely agree with you on the lack of funding these days for kids. When my sister and I were growing up we experienced all those things you mentioned-we loved our Spring carnival (complete with cake walk and go fish games as well), classroom holiday parties, Halloween parades, field trips, etc. It’s sad that kids these days don’t get half of that!
I’m so thankful that my kids are at a school that doesn’t have funding worries, but there are too, too many schools that do. This seems like a great way to help out.

That is so true! Growing up we had so many fun events and field trips. My girls don’t get nearly as many activities or parties that’s why I try to help out in their classrooms and help with parties for holidays. I want my children to have those same memories. This sounds like a great way to give back. and help schools.

Kids are really shortchanged with the budget cuts that schools are experiencing. They don’t get the same level of interactivity that we did.

It makes me sad that educational funding is always the first to get cut. My kids don’t get to do the fun things we did in school either, and that’s a shame. I am glad there are opportunities like this for them to get funds though!
My son had a lot of music in his high school, he was in choir for three hours a day, thought he would end up going to music school, he followed another passion.

This is a great way to help out schools that are need. Thankfully, the school my kids go to don’t have any funding issues but you never know what could happen.
I hate that they think to cut funds in the arts is where they should make cuts. The arts are where your brain fires up the most!
