Cleaning is definitely not one of my favorite things to do.  I don’t mind washing dishes, but I greatly dislike cleaning sinks, counters and floors that might involve toxic chemicals.  I especially don’t like when I use cleaners and then find it difficult to breathe because the fumes are so strong.  Learning about the Toxic Substances Control Act (aka TCSA) definitely makes me want to do something about protecting our health and environment.

When at the store and shopping for paper towels, laundry detergent, and other everyday products for our home, many of us have a tendency to prioritize our purchases with eco-friendly, toxin-free, and sustainable products.  We can voice our support for the importance of protecting our planet and living in a toxin-free environment by purchasing from brands that strive to reduce their environmental impact through the production, use and disposal of their products.

Seventh Generation is one such brand.  I have used Seventh Generation products in our home and especially like the multipurpose cleaners – allowing me to clean multiple surfaces without damaging my (or my family’s) health.  Seventh Generation offers a range of environmentally sustainable household and personal care products that don’t use unnecessary, toxic chemicals in its production.  I’m excited that this Spring, Seventh Generation will be starting a nationwide movement about the Toxic Substances Control Act, TCSA.

TCSA was first passed in 1976 by Congress and only requires EPA testing on less than ten percent of the synthetic chemicals used in common household products.  That means that there are more than 80,000 chemicals available in the United States that have never been test for their toxic effects on our health and environment.  Scientists have linked exposure to toxic chemicals to many health risks, including Cancer, Alzheimer’s, learning disabilities, asthma, birth defects, and various reproductive problems.  Pretty scary, huh?  Although scientists link exposure to toxic chemicals to many health risks, TCSA hasn’t been updated since 1976.  Through April 24th, Seventh Generation has set a goal to collect 100,000 signatures that will be use to create meaningful reform and ensure all 80,000 synthetic chemicals used in everyday products are studied, evaluated, and tested.

What can you do to make a difference?  You can start by becoming a Toxin Freedom Fighters and signing Seventh Generation’s petition to urge Congress to reevaluate the Toxic Substances Control Act for the first time since 1976.  We’d also love to have you join us a the #FightToxins Twitter Party on Thursday, April 10th from 1:00 – 2:00 pm EST.  We’ll be chatting about tips and tricks for living a healthy, green lifestyle as well as the importance of using products with as few chemicals as possible.

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Seventh Generation. I received a promotional item and product samples as a thank you for participating.
