When I was a kid, I brushed my teeth on a regular basis for the most part.  I especially brushed them thoroughly when it was time to go to the dentist because I wanted a good report and NO cavities!  However, I was one of those unfortunate kids who would brush their teeth on a regular basis and STILL get cavities and might even require root canal treatment. Not a ton of cavities, but enough to where I’m nervous now every time I set foot in a general dentistry office.

As a mom, I make sure our kids brush their teeth well.  Not only so they have bright, white, healthy-looking teeth, but so they don’t end up having to go to the dentist for fillings or dental implants like I had to as a kid.  I also bring up my future in-law’s pet – Buster.  I swear to you, he was the sweetest dog ever and I loved seeing him, however, he also had the worst teeth ever.  I could use those moments and get grossed out, but instead, I used them as teaching moments.  Whenever teeth brushing became an issue, I would remind them of Buster’s rotting teeth and bad breath and that if they don’t brush their teeth, they’ll end up with the same thing.  Needless to say, they have pretty healthy, clean teeth!

When it comes to brushing teeth, kids like for it to be fun! Get involved…show them how to brush their teeth. Use kid-friendly products, such as Oral-B toothbrushes and Crest toothpaste.  Oral-B offers a variety of products, featuring characters from Disney‘s “Cars” and Disney Princesses.  Plus, Crest offers characters on their toothpaste products as well.  To help kids learn how long to brush their teeth, be sure to check out the new FREE Oral-B Disney Timer App!  So many ways to make brushing teeth fun instead of a chore!!!

  1. Lol – your title made me lol. Because I tell my son that from time to time. “Elijah, if you don’t brush your teeth before you go to bed, you’re going to be toothless one day.” Now we laugh really hard because we love Toothless, the dragon in How to Train Your Dragon. This app is really cool – it gives a kid some real incentive besides his half crazy mama.

  2. That is so cute. What a great way to encourage a healthy habit.

That is so clever. When I was a kid I stunk at brushing my teeth and now I am paying the price with lots of cavities and dental work. UGH. I love this as an idea because it’s smart and my kids would use it. They are in the bathroom with iPods and gadgets all the time and I have to say listen put down the iPod or iPad so you can finish the job. Now I could say are you using your app and be a fun mom instead!
