‘Tis the season for the windows to be closed and the heat turned on because “Baby, It’s Cold Outside!!!”  With closed windows and increased usage of the heater, we want to make sure our family is breathing in the cleanest air possible.

With the increased usage of the heater, it is more important than ever to properly maintain systems so they can endure the winter season.  Unlike some filters with similar ratings that are tightly woven and can restrict airflow, the Filtrete Micro Allergen Reduction Filter provides a balance of particle capture and airflow.  This helps to prevent stress on the system as well as reducing the amount of energy needed to reach desired temperatures.

You should not only maintain your home for the winter months, but also for the upcoming summer months.  Here are some maintenance tips from trusted HGTV Contractor Mike Holmes, who recommends these tasks that can each be completed in 20 minutes or less!

Air Conditioning Filters:  Use an electrostatically charged Filtrete Brand Air Filter to help capture dust, pollen and lint from the air passing through the filter.  Plus, changing your filter at the start of every season helps protect and maintain your system.

Hot Water Heaters:  Set your hot water heaters at 120˚F or below to avoid potential scalding.

Stove:  Remove and wash stove grates, burners and coils with warm water and soap.  Over time, grease can build up around the stove, increasing the changes of a fire.

Fire Extinguishers:  Check the expiration dates on your fire extinguishers.  You should keep one on each floor of your home. Read this informative article about house fires at https://www.sellingahousewithfiredamage.com/what-happens-to-property-values-after-a-fire.

Cracks:  Inspect the floor, walls and foundation of the home for cracks.  Jot them down on your home to-do list, and fix them before they lead to deterioration and wood rot.

Those who will be using fuel-powered steam generator or heating system this winter should contact a propane gas delivery company. For the HVAC system, learn how to turn off gas furnace to ensure everyone’s safety. A professional propane tank delivery service can do the actual refilling of gas for everyone’s safety.

In addition to these helpful maintenance tips, check out these quick statistics.

–  According to EnergyStar, the average household spends more than $2,200 a year on energy bills, with half of this directly related to heating and cooling costs. And these solar energy consultants here mentioned the future of solar energy; that it will offer an efficient, non-greenhouse-gas-emitting form of electricity generation.

–  According to the American Lung Association, the average American breathes 3,400 gallons of air each day.

I don’t know about you, but just from reading these quick statistics, it definitely inspires me to change my air filters on a regular basis.  Filtrete helps make that easy by offering seasonal e-newsletters that feature special offers, filter change reminders, better home living tips and more.  You can register for the seasonal e-newsletters HERE.

These are very good tips in helping me maintain my home during the Winter season. One important tip is to make sure to change the furnace filter every year. It really helps with the heat bill! And keeping the hot water turned down saves me a lot of money!
