AT&T It Can Wait: Will You Take the Pledge This Summer?

Summer is here and that means there is more driving – but is there more texting too? I am excited to be promoting the AT&T It Can Wait Pledge this summer and sharing information I’ve learned about texting and driving. Texting while driving is definitely an easy thing to want to do, but it can also be a deadly thing – for you, your passengers, and those around you. AT&T went out and surveyed both adult and teen drivers and here is what they found.

According to a recent survey, 49% admitted to texting while driving – a higher rate than reported by teens (43 percent). Wow! So, what does this mean? This means that people are texting while driving more than they used to. Six in 10 commuters said they never texted while driving three years ago. This also means that texting while driving continues despite knowing the risks. 98 percent said sending a text or email while driving isn’t safe. This also means that for many, it has become a habit. More than 40 percent of those who admitted to texting while driving called it a habit.

Now, how about teen drivers? An AT&T teen driver survey found that 97% say it is dangerous – but 43 percent admit to doing so. Did you know that almost all teens (nine in 10) expect a reply to a text or email within five minutes or less, which puts pressure on them to respond while driving? According to 77 percent of teens, adults tell kids not to text or email while driving – yet adults do it themselves “all the time.” The survey also revealed that Hispanic teens (54 percent) are more likely to admit to the practice of texting while driving than Caucasian (41 percent) and African American (42 percent) teens.
