Travel: The Mommy-Files Heads to Mexico City

I have been to Mexico twice in my life – once through Tijuana to a suburb for a church-related project when I was in Junior High and once to a resort in Cancun last July.  These were very different experiences, as you can imagine!  Then I was invited to attend a FAM Press Trip to Mexico City, Mexico this May thanks to the Turismo Ciudad de México.

I was excited about going because I love to travel and share my experiences and pictures online – you probably saw a bunch of them if you follow me on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook!  However, I was also a little nervous because of the reaction I had from friends around me.  I told them I was going on a trip to Mexico City and immediately was asked, “Are you sure it’s safe?”  I’ll be honest…that caused my concerns to grow somewhat.  However, I was confident in the PR firm I was working with (as I worked with them on the Cancun trip as well) and wanted to see what Mexico City had to offer.  I also did my research on Google and found that there are several parts of Mexico that aren’t safe, but Mexico City was not one of them.

TRAVELING TO MEXICO CITY 

It was a long day of traveling for me.  I left our local airport in San Luis Obispo (a small airport) very early in the morning.  Then it was a short flight to Phoenix and onto Mexico City.  I learned from the PR rep that I would be flying with another blogger for the event out of Phoenix and I was excited to meet her.  Plus, it always helps to know someone when you’re flying into international territory!  I traveled via US Airways and they were awesome, complete with great customer service, a clean plane, and an overall good experience.

I met Jody from Travel Mamas and we talked to one another throughout the flight.  We talked about our careers, our families, our jobs, and traveling, of course.  I had not really talked with another travel blogger, so this was a really neat experience.  What’s even neater?  She hadn’t been blogging for very long and was from Canada.  Yes, I love talking with people from other countries.  It’s just something that has always fascinated me.

It was a pretty good flight, with the exception of the turbulence towards the end, and before we knew it, we were arriving at Benito Juárez International Airport, the country’s largest airport!  This airport has more than 30 domestic and international airlines providing direct flights to more than 100 destinations in Mexico and around the world.

We got separated upon deplaning, but met up once we went through Customs.  In Customs, I handed the officer my passport and Customs form and said, “ Buenos diás.  ¿Cómo estás?”  Usually at this point, I get a weird look because they have standing in from of them a fair skinned, redhead who is trying to speak their language with an accent and are not sure how to respond.  But they respond and then start speaking in Spanish at a fast pace and that’s when I know I’m in trouble.  So I smile and make the universal “small” sign with my fingers and say “Un poquito Español.”  They usually smile and nod, giving me credit for trying to speak their language.  I definitely do want to learn to speak Spanish more fluently.  It’s a goal anyways!

At the airport, we met up with Jessica from Mom Central and a person who was holding a sign with our names on it.  I was so excited to finally meet Jess in person, as I had been working with her for sometime now.  I think we were both excited to see one another finally (just one of the many perks of attending blogging events).

We had a little while to wait for the car, so we ducked into a bar and had a beer.  After all, you have to have a Corona when you’re in Mexico!  My drink was in a glass and had salt around the rim and a lime mixture in the bottle.  I tried it, but it was very tart for my taste.  So I settled for finishing the beer that was in my bottle.  We paid our bill and headed to the van.  Then it was on to the hotel.

I loved looking at all the different people, homes, and parts of the city from the van.  The city had so many beautiful statues and colorful buildings.  There were definitely some parts that I didn’t feel comfortable getting out of my car in, but that is true of any big city!  I was feeling very excited about our tour through Mexico City!
