When I was attending Junior College and working towards my AA degree, I had something happen in my life that changed my attitude towards protecting your identity.  I was in the school library, researching the symbols and their meanings on the dollar bill.  I was going to be giving a speech on this topic a few days later.  I got up from my chair in search of a particular book and left my backpack sitting on the floor by my chair.  I was gone for less than a minute and when I came back, my backpack was nowhere to be found.  We searched EVERYWHERE – this is not an understatement.

In my backpack was my wallet (with my driver’s license, school id, library card, and cash), 2 weeks of notes for a 4 week class, textbooks, and I’m sure a few other things.  I felt so violated and upset that someone just literally walked off with my personal belongings!  A few days later, my backpack was located in a dumpster at the school – but nothing was in it.

Now, imagine this on an even larger scale!  Someone using your identity to open new lines of credit, seek medical attention, drain savings and retirement accounts, provide an alias when arrested, or getting a job and filing false tax returns?  That’s pretty scary stuff right?  Having your identity stolen isn’t just costly in time and money, it can also lead to false imprisonment, life-threatening false medical records, and much more.  In the hands of a thief, just your name, address, Social Security number and date of birth can be used to acquire all of these things!

Did you know that identity theft is the number one consumer complaint?  No wonder since your information is pretty much everywhere! You may take good care in protecting your personal information, but what about everyone else who has it?  How about the doctor’s office, work, school and everywhere you shop?  So how do you protect it?  This is where LifeLock comes into play!  The material and tools in LifeLock’s Identity Theft 101 suite will show you the steps you can take to limit your risk and help better protect your identity.
