The story, The Charge, starts on a dark and steamy Caribbean night, as Brendon Burchard stands bleeding on top of the crumpled hood of his wrecked car. That night, as he sat on the hood, he had a first-hand look at how real mortality is. He discovered, in that moment, that at the end of each of our lives, we will ask ourselves, “Did I live? Did I love? Did I matter?”

Since that night, Brendon has lived a fully charged life, and he’s helped millions do it as well. Brendon has helped people transform their lives and feel more alive, engaged and fulfilled. Brendon points out how the emotional energy of the world has flatlined – that they are stressed, restless, and wanting more out of life. Despite the fact that most people have what they need to be happy, they rarely feel the levels of satisfaction, engagement, or excitement that they should. So, what do we do about it?

In The Charge, Brendon argues that the only way we can measurably improve the quality of our lives is to learn how to activate the very 10 drives that make us most human. So, what are these drives Brendon is talking about? They are your desires for more control, competence, congruence, caring, connection, change, challenge, creative expression, contribution, and consciousness. These are the drives that shape everything we think, feel, and do in life, so understanding and mastering them is critical to our success and happiness. If we activate these drives on a consistent basis, we’ll be on the fastest path to living a fully charged life.  Brendon has devised what he calls the true “activators” of human experience – a series of powerful yet simple actions we can take to radically increase our levels of energy, engagement, and fulfillment in all areas of our life.

In The Charge, Brendon talks about the Five Baseline Drives, which include the drive for control, the drive for competence, the drive for congruence, the drive for caring, and the drive for connection. He also talks about the Five Forward Drives, which include the drive for change, the drive for challenge, the drive for creative expression, the drive for contribution, and the drive for consciousness.

So, what is a person who lives a charged life like? This person, also known as a Charger, is (1) open and observant in the moment; (2) future oriented; (3) challenge seekers; (4) deeply interested in and authentically connected with others; (5) self-reliant; (6) creatively driven; and (7) meaning makers.
