Today is World Water Day – Change Begins with a Drop
Today is World Water Day and people all over the world are celebrating it! World Water Day is an observance begun by the United Nations in 1993 to advocate for the sustainable management of our most precious natural resource – fresh water sources. Here are some interesting facts about water:
– 66% of the human body is water; a person can only live without water for approximately one week
– Up to 75% of the Earth’s surface is covered with water but less than 0.03% is drinkable
– More than a billion people in water poor regions around the globe survive on the same amount used to flush a toilet or take a 5-minute shower, just over 1 gallon of water each day.
– Each day almost 10,000 children under the age of 5 in Third World countries die as a result of illnesses contracted by use of impure water.
Our children are our future, so it is so important to educate them about conserving water. A great way to educate them is by getting them directly involved. As part of Siemens’ commitment to helping communities make big changes in how they consume, manage and recycle fresh water, the company has developed these fun and interactive family-friendly tools to help educate our children on water usage and make a household commitment to conserving water:

I always look for more ways to conserve water around the house. I am teaching my son to use less water by turning the water off when he brushes his teeth.
I love what Siemens is doing to help educate people! I’ve just started the conversation about water conservation with my 3 year olds, and though they don’t totally get it now I know how important it is to instill this message at an early age. We sing the “never let the water run” song when we brush our teeth 😉
I am crazy about conserving water in our house. We use buckets to collect the shower water before it warms up and then use the water for the plants in the yard.
I never knew there was a World Water Day or that such a little amount of water was drinkable. Desalination is a really expensive process from what I’ve heard.
