I remember how excited I was for my first little boy to arrive.  I had never been a mother before and had no idea what to expect when he came into our lives.  Most new moms expect the sleepless nights, crying babies, and diminished sexual desire, but do they expect constipation?  No way!

“As a new mom and registered dietitian, I always recommend exercise and a balanced, fiber‐rich diet to new mothers who are experiencing constipation after childbirth,” says Tammy Lakatos Shames, RD, LD, CDN, CFT. “However, I know from personal experience that it isn’t always easy to deal with a new baby and take care of your own nutrition needs at the same time. I needed more help. My doctor recommended Colace® Capsules, and it worked well for me.”

According to a survey of 1,007 new moms conducted by Russell Research and commissioned by the Purdue Products L.P. line of laxatives, 7 out of 10( 70%) who said they experienced constipation after childbirth explained that having bowel movements in the days immediately following childbirth was worse than they expected.

Colace® Capsules offers a gentle way to relieve irregularity for new moms, or anyone experiencing difficulty straining due to occasional constipation. If pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor before use. Please read full product label before use.

More About the Colace® Comfort Sweepstakes

Colace® Capsules are designed to bring comfort to new moms when they need it most.  This month, the brand launched the Colace® Comfort Sweepstakes, a three-month national sweepstakes promotion in which anyone age 18 or older can enter to win an array of deluxe, comforting prizes, such as Tempur-Pedic Mattresses, Apple iPads, Kindle Fires, Keurig Coffee Makers, and more.  Prizes will be awarded each week for a total value of more than $50,000.  The sweepstakes will end on June 2, 2012.

“We created the Colace® Comfort Sweepstakes to offer some everyday comforts to the millions of Americans who suffer from occasional constipation which can result in straining. We also want to remind consumers that Colace® Capsules are stimulant‐free, and provide comfortable relief from occasional constipation,” explains Charlene Bailey, Director, Product Management, Purdue Products L.P., a leader in providing products for relief of occasional constipation.

New moms can enter the sweepstakes as many times as they like by visiting the promotional website, www.ColaceComfort.com or through a free standing FSI coupon in more than 46,000,000 newspapers across the country. The coupon features a special QR code enabling smart phone users a quick link to the sweepstakes entry page. Consumers can also enter offline by mailing their contact information to Colace® Comfort, P.O. Box 724, Southport, CT  06890. Hundreds of prizes totaling over $50,000 will be given out to randomly selected winners. Prizes include Tempur-Pedic Mattresses, Apple iPads, Kindle Fires, Keurig Coffee Makers, Bose Headphones, Ralph Lauren Cashmere Sweaters and more, all designed to make life a little more comfortable for new mothers. As a new mom, I was definitely more comfortable knowing that I had a trusted family member was taking care of my son while I was getting adjusted to having another newborn. I had several people offer to purchase feminine products (including Colace) for me making it one less thing for me to worry about. My fiancee made me a little area in the living room with a comfortable rocking recliner, pillows, blankets, a diaper changing caddy . snacks and drinks for me. It really made those first few days home easy for me.

For a new mother, hmmm, well i know that new mothers like to have some time to themselves and their baby when they first bring home the baby. That first period of bonding time is important. As far as what can I do or give to make the new mother comfortable, maybe cook some meals and have them in her freezer ready for her to just pop in the oven so she doesn’t have to fuss with cooking during that first little period of time. Maybe a plush robe and some great smelling bath stuff so she can enjoy a shower or bath and then put on a great feeling robe.

  144. Yvonne Butler says:

Our youth pastors and his wife had a 18 month old girl when they found that she was carring 4. She lost one early on and spent a lot of time in the hospital to keep the other three. Our Sunday School with the help of others of the churh contributing money for him to spend every minute he could with her and the little girl stayed with a family in church who had grandchildren her age. The frandmother needed to be with HER daughter as much as she could. We fixed up her home for the babies coming. There was three of everything and we didn’t leave out the older child either. I am 70 and most of my class are retired and some a little older. You should have seen the excitment of every little thing we got. They were suprised but couldn’t have been any move blessed than we were. Each of us who were able went in pairs once a week to clean, help with the children and sent the mommy and daddy off for a small break at lunch time. Sometimes it was for a picnic or just a table outside on the padio but they had a few minutes for themselves. Many times we looked out the window and would see them holding hands and praying together. We made sure we prayed for her strength and knowledge for the best way to raise these children. She is a little petite lady that weights about 90 pounds even after that and has the most energy you have ever seen. God doesn’t make mistakes. He knew they could handle everything with a “little help from their friends” We continued for 3 months going every week. and then we backed off and oftered to baby sit occasionally. I will never forget this for it blessed me so MUCH!

  165. I always make my new mommy friends something that might seem a little crazy at first. I get big men’s tube socks and put one inside the other. Inside the socks, I pour in white rice and then tie a knot at the end. When the mom’s milk comes in and needs a little heat to express milk to get the flow going, they can pop the sock into the microwave for about 30 seconds. It emits an amazing damp, warm heat that is soothing for the soar breast and helps the milk flow out. Yep, kind of graphic, but I’ve never gotten any complaints!

I think the best thing you can do for a new mother is to cook and clean so she can spend time with her baby.

  429. Christie Yerby says:

Bring her snacks and meals. Watch the baby and answer the phone while she naps.

I would buy a new mother new, plush bedding and pillows so that the few moments of rest she gets are the most comfortable they could possibly be!

I usually take deli meats and cheese and fresh breads so everyone can eat whenever they feel like eating. I also think doing the laundry is a easy thing to do to make mom’s life easier.

I could bring over some grocery basics and watch the infant while the mother showers in peace to make a new mom feel comfortable.

  445. Chrsi N says:

I could take deli meats and cheeses, along with fresh bread, so everyone can feed themselves whenever the time and desire arise. Hopefully, this would take some of the pressure off mom.

As a new mother myself, having a stash of frozen (homemade) meals that can be just reheated is awesome! Nutrition is important for the new mother, but she’s often busy and doesn’t take the time to cook properly.
