My dad served as a Marine during the Vietnam war and I am so grateful to him for his sacrifice and service to our country.  I know that when he came home from Vietnam, he was not welcomed by many, but rather spat upon, cursed at, glared at, and looked down upon.  I am ashamed of those who would do such a thing to a man (or woman) who risked his (or her) life to be of service to our country.  As such, I have taken an active approach and made sure that any member of the military I see knows that I appreciate what he or she does for our country.  It’s as simple as walking up to him, shaking his hand, and saying “thank you for serving our country.”  You would be amazed at how surprised I’ve seen so many military personnel react to this act of gratitude.  That indicates to me that it is not said enough.

One time, I was with my dad at breakfast and we were waiting in line to pay for our food.  A soldier in uniform was behind us waiting to pay for his meal.  I turned around, shook his hand, and thanked him for his service (starting to tear up as I said it).  My dad also shook his hand, thanked him, and asked him where he was serving.  It was our turn at the register and my dad handed them our bill and his credit card.  He told the cashier that he would also like to pay for the soldier’s meal.  The soldier was totally surprised and very grateful to my dad for the meal.  I was so proud of my dad at that amount.  That was a simple example of how he extended his thanks to our military and supported a soldier.

A few years back, I had signed up through a website and “adopted” a soldier in Afghanistan.  I only sent a few packages, but it was such a neat thing to do.  I filled the package with goodies that they wouldn’t see on a daily basis and included daily essentials, as well as magazines to read.  He was so thankful for the care package and I was so excited to send it to him and bring some brightness to his day.

I was really excited to learn about a new campaign brought together by Cheerios and Walmart to send Cheer to members of our military – the Cheerios sendCheer campaign.

  1. Thank you for spreading the word about this wonderful program.
Thank your dad also for his kindness to the soldier… When my son was on his was back from Afghanistan, he had someone pay for his lunch at the airport during a layover. It really was a surprise to him also, so you are right, our gratitude is not shown nearly enough to our troops.
Hugs to you and your dad!!
