On March 22nd, people all over the globe will be celebrating International World Water Day.  The observance of International World Water Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro.  The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution that designated March 22nd the World Day for Water.  It was to be observed starting in 1993.

Here are some interesting facts about water usage:

  • – Less than 1% of the earth’s water is suitable for drinking
  • – More than a billion people around the globe survive on just over 1 gallon (4 liters) of water per day
  • – Potentially more than 3 billion people may suffer from water shortages by the year 2005
  • – 66% of the human body is water
  • – A person can only live without water for approximately one week

As part of Siemens commitment to helping communities make big changes in how they consume, manage and recycle fresh water, the company has developed the Personal Water Footprint Calculator, a great family-friendly tool for parents to educate their children on water usage and make a household commitment to conserving water. After completing a family-friendly quiz, families can commit to making a specific conservation goal in their daily lives. Then, they can share their commitment with family and friends via Facebook to help spread word about this very important resource.
