I keep an emergency bag in my back seat with water, granola bars, sweat shirts, and blankets. Three years ago we were on our way to the Seattle airport and a blizzard hit we were stuck on the freeway for 8 hours—my emergency bag saved the day.

I always make sure everything is adjusted before I start out on the road. I check my mirrors, seat, make sure all of the belongings are secured, and make sure I have clear line of sight. I also check my tires regularly in the winter months, and make sure to do things like lock the doors before I set off.
Make sure your tires are properly inflated.

In the winter, we make sure we have a full tank … not only does it ensure that we can get home when traffic is moving slowly, the added weight helps to keep us on the road (instead of sliding off of it).

In Colorado a winter safety tip would be to slow down because you need to be prepared to hit what we call “Black Ice”. It will really fool you here. You don’t see it, the roads can look like normal black pavement, but have a very thin ice sheet built up on it, and throw you off the road or into another lane if you are going too fast. You always need to leave more stopping room in winter here. I think the greatest number of accidents here in winter are rear-enders.

Don’t pass snow plows and sanding trucks. I live in Northern MN and they are out on the roads daily. If you try and pass you are gonna find the road in front of them worse than the road behind. Be patient and give your self more time based on the road conditions.

4×4’s don’t work by magic which is why there are a lot of accidents with them in the winter–people have no idea how to drive them. When going into a slide, give it some gas which will straighten the vehicle out. Of course, 4×4’s don’t work on ice at all.

I live in Texas. The only specifc winter “driving” tip is NOT to drive if there is ice on the road–actually, that would be my tip for any part of the country. No one can predict how an ice patch will affect the control of your car. While a good driver can probably steer out of it, again, you can’t predict what will be in your path. I can’t afford to have my car messed up–much less have myself or someone else injured. Very, very few people need to be out driving in such conditions.

With all the snow we’ve had this winter my biggest tip is to use extreme caution when pulling out of a street or driveway. The snowbanks are plowed so high that you can’t see oncoming traffic until you are already in the road.

Make sure you have a Winter Survival Pack in your car! It should have at least one blanket in one of those giant Ziploc bags and snacks (like trail mix for energy).

My tip for driving in the winter is to make sure u have something warm, like a blanket or extra coat, and some water and snacks. We recently had to drive in the snow to get to a doctors appt, and ended up running off the interstate and in the ditch! It was super scary, but we got lucky and the car still ran. We did have our blanket and water though, just in case! This car kit would be nice to have!

I don’t have a tip for winter driving because I hate it so much. What I do is totally ignore the idiots who refuse to slow down on dangerously slick roads. I go the speed I think is safe and to heck with them. I do keep a blanket, water, and even a bag of ice melt product in my car in the winter.

I live in MN so I’ve got some experience on icy roads. I’d say the best tip is to never take your eyes off of the road. Always be watching for an icy spot, a snow drift, or slippery intersections. Be vigilant!

When driving during the winter, especially on long trips on icy roads, I always carry candles in the car. If I become stuck, the candles would provide enough heat to prevent freezing. 🙂 Thank you.

A winter safety tip I use is to drive into a skid if I start to slip on icy roads. I like the Wooden Railway Train Set by Melissa & Doug toy.
My tip is to always have at least a half tank of gas. If you get stuck on the road in the winter, you want to be able to run your car so you don’t freeze!

If you have a newer car, don’t pump your brakes if you hit a patch of ice. Most cars have antilock braking systems that will do it for you. (Read your car’s manual to be sure.)

Silly rule, but CLEAN the snow off of your winders before you drive. You would not believe the accident by my home this past winter (running through a red light) because the driver could not see that the light was red…. many injuries in this accident.
