Thanksgiving Butterball Turkey Giveaway
Growing up, we had Butterball Turkeys every year at Thanksgiving. To this day, I still think that Butterball turkeys have the most flavor of the turkeys out there and cook up beautifully! This year, I was happy to have the opportunity to purchase a Butterball turkey and continue in the tradition of serving up a juicy, golden brown turkey to my family and guests! Along with the turkey, we’ll be serving up homemade mashed potatoes, homemade gravy, green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole, rolls, and pumpkin pie. Yummy! It’s making me hungry just thinking about it!
Butterball asked me to share a favorite memory or Thanksgiving blooper on The Mommy-Files and I am excited to do so! The first memory I want to share is when I was in elementary school and I decided that I wanted to take on the task of making the pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving dessert. Now, I’m sure the pumpkin pies would have been fabulous…..had I remembered the sugar! Dangit! They tasted horrible and we had no homemade dessert to serve up after our grand turkey dinner! However, we did have some ice cream in the freezer, which nobody seemed to mind. I’ll tell ya, I never forgot the sugar again and always followed the ingredient list from top to bottom with any other pumpkin pies I made in the future. I haven’t messed up one since – knock on wood!
The second favorite memory I had was when I was pregnant (with Dallen I believe) and I decided to give my parents a Thanksgiving Dinner for their Christmas present that year. I cooked the turkey, made all of the side dishes, and served up a most delicious Thanksgiving meal…..and it was the first Thanksgiving meal I had ever made completely by myself! I was so tired afterwards!!!

Not cooking the turkey long enough..
my Grandparents had a group of 8 friends that had Thanksgiving together for over 50 years (and still going). My Grandmother once made vegetable medley and somebody made the mistake of saying it was good (she can not cook) and she has now been making it for 35+ years every Thanksgiving and it disappears. I think somebody throws it out every year.

I had to work one year and my husband did the cooking and I just had to set the table when I got home. It was great.

A favorite new recipe is Paula Deen’s gingerbread trifle. It combines the flavors of pumpkin and gingerbread (two of my holiday favorites) in one dish. It’s very rich, however.
One Thanksgiving blooper for me was when I was about 7 or 8. I had been throwing a ball with a cousin – back and forth over the in-ground pool. You guessed it! One time, I leaned in too far and fell head first into the pool! I was soaked – with no change of clothes. I’ll NEVER forget that one!

BLOOPER Making all the sides way before the Turkey is done cooking. The sides are cold and we have to reheat in the microwave and the sides get a bit tough. All with extended family joining us for dinner.

I’ll never forget the Thanksgiving turkey that ended my sister’s vegetarian diet! Hail to the turkey!
I can’t get into store bought, canned cranberry Sauce anymore, I have to make my own. This is the recipe I use:
1 – 12 ounce bag of fresh or frozen cranberries
1 – cup sugar
1 – cup water
1/2 grated orange rind
In a pan, mix water and sugar on medium heat until sugar is dissolved. Add cranberries and bring to a low boil. Add Orange rind . Reduce heat to keep the sauce at a low boil for about 10 minutes, stirring often. When the sauce begins to thicken or cranberries begin to burst, remove from heat. The sauce thicken as it cools. refrigerate until serving.

The one and only time I cooked a turkey I thought I was doing so well. I had everything on the table at the same time. Unfortunately, the turkey was nowhere near done. I cooked it like it said but I guess my oven was slow. So, we ate everything but turkey and went out to dinner every year after that.

A favorite Thanksgiving memory is gathering at my aunt’s house one Thanksgiving and helping my 9 yo cousin decorate a Santa-shaped cranberry-jello molded salad ‘thing’. LOL We also made little turkeys out of Nilla wafers, KitKats, and kisses, I think. 🙂
favorite memory is when all the cousins would bring sleeping bags to the front porch to sleep so we didn’t have to hear all the snoring relatives inside… loved getting together for large family Thanksgivings.

The one Thanksgiving that always comes to mind isn’t really a blooper or a favorite one but it’s one I’ll never forget. I have always loved Thanksgiving and when I was 5 I was horribly sick with the flu. I remember Thanksgiving morning came and my Mom said I was too sick to go to Thanksgiving and I told her maybe I would feel better in the morning (I think it was about 5am but it was still dark so to me it was still night time). I ended up having to stay home with my Dad who of course turned on Football and then fell asleep. It was a miserable Thanksgiving but definitely made me appreciate every Thanksgiving after that!

My favorite recipe at Thanksgiving is twice baked potatoes! Yum!
I don’t know that it is my favorite, but it is certainly my most memorable. The first year we moved in to our new home I decided to host Thanksgiving dinner for my inlaws. This particular year everyone decided to come (not a common thing) making our guest list in the mid 20’s. This was a to be a sit down dinner. Ugh. Anyway, the morning of the big dinner, my son (who was 2) and my husband both got ill. They both had high fevers. I called people but they still wanted to come (turns out some of them were sick as well). I had to prepare the meal with my son trying to cling to me or hear him crying for me while someone else tried to comfort him. It was awful. It took me 12 years to agree to host one again.
I DO NOT HAVE THE RECEIPE FOR THE PUMPKIN PIE THAT MY GRANDMOTHER USED TO ME….IT WAS SO DELICIOUS AND SHE MADE EVERYTHING FROM SCRATCH….MY GRANDMOTHER HAS PASSED ON BUT I STILL REMEMBER HER PUMPKIN PIES

The first year we were married, we had my parents, two brothers, and sister over for a Thanksgiving style dinner one night in our little one bedroom apartment. It was quite entertaining having my mom and I try to prepare the meal in our tiny little kitchen, but it turned out wonderfully. I was so nervous about cooking a turkey for the first time and called my mom at least a half dozen times throughout the process, but it was perfect!

A mistake I made was forgetting to thaw out the turkey a couple of days before Thanksgiving. Dinner took a lot longer to prepare, but it was still delicious!

My favorite thanksgiving recipe is Pumpkin Whoopie Pies
I love carrot souffle…here is the recipe:
Ingredients:Servings:
6 66Servings Size
Update
1/2 cup crushedcorn flakes or 1/2 cup walnuts
3 tablespoons brown sugar
2 teaspoons soft butter
1 lb carrot, cooked
3 eggs
1/3 cup sugar
3 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 dash nutmeg
Combine the crushed corn flakes or walnuts, brown sugar and butter, Set aside. 2 Puree the cooked carrots and the eggs in a blender. Add the sugar, flour, vanilla, melted butter, and nutmeg and blend. 3 Pour into a 1 1/2 quart greased souffle dish or pan. 4 Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. 5 Spread the topping over the souffle and bake 5-10 minutes longer.

I’d love this turkey with some pumpkin pie this year
When I was 16 my dad was seriously ill in a hospital 125 miles away and my mother was there with him. That left my brother – who is like a lump on a log – and I home alone for Thanksgiving. I got the wonderful idea that I was going to fix Thanksgiving dinner – turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie – the whole thing on my own. It all turned out great – for the most part, and I’ve been in charge of Thanksgiving dinner ever since!

Every year when I was a kid, we went to Grandma’s for Thanksgiving. She always had a “kids’ table” and I hated sitting there! I was a “big girl” and deserved to sit with the grown-ups, or so I thought! Ever since then, I’ve never had a “kids’ table” at my house.

My favorite Thanksgiving memory is when all my family got together in 2008. Everyone, including cousins, great aunts and family friends attended. People I hadn’t see for years were there. It was such a great Thanksgiving. I loved seeing everyone all together in one place. I will cherish that Thanksgiving forever.!

One year for Thanksgiving, we were having it at my cousin’s new house. They had a huge dog that was put in the garage at night to sleep. They put the frozen turkey on a high shelf to thaw. Thanksgiving morning, when my cousin went to get the turkey, she opened the garage door and saw nothing but plastic pieces and bones! The huge dog had reached the turkey and ate it! lol! 😉
A few years ago, I hosted my first Thanksgiving at my house… everything was going perfect until we pulled the Turkey out of the oven… I dropped it and it practically flew across the kitchen…. I was crying for hours and my family has still not let it go!

Mine’s a pumpkin pie blooper too! My son and I were baking the night before and were making two pies. We doubled the recipe for everything except the spices and didn’t realize it until we cut into them the next day. Talk about yucky!
My favorite memory was when I was young and our whole family going to grandma’s house and gathering all together for Thanksgiving.

One year we went to my husband’s brother’s home for Thanksgiving. Prior to this, we had asked if there was anything we could bring and were told no that they had everything under control. When we got there the night before, my sister-in-law decided she was to sick to fix anything so everyone decided I was in charge of it all. The 19 lb turkey was still in the freezer and they wanted to eat at noon the next day. Their idea of enough food was a small can of green beans, a box of instant mashed potatoes, a small box of Stove Top, the frozen turkey, and a bag of rolls for six adults and three children. It was a disaster! I was up all night trying to defrost the turkey. I would not let my children even eat the turkey because it wasn’t fully thawed whenever everyone wanted it in the oven. I have refused to ever to there for Thanksgiving ever since.

I have many good and a few not so good Thanksgiving memories (some) of my family spending thanksgiving together and the reason it was just (some) of my family is because my father would be absent during the thanksgiving time because it was deer season & he was deer hunting and the location he preferred to hunt took him far away from our home to his cabin in WV, Unfortunately he never spent a thanksgiving dinner with us and growing up we were alittle disappointed at times that he wasnt with us but we knew deer season was his favorite time of the year and he enjoyed being out there in the woods hunting, of course he always shot a deer or two (or three) during hunting season and would bring it back home for my mother to cook throughout the year, me & mom and my 3 sisters would usually go to another relatives home for dinner and as we got older and moved out of the house we still spent thanksgiving together at one of our homes but of course without dad, Thanksgiving will be sadder and different this year for all of us as we lost him last year but we are grateful that he did get one last deer season in 2008 and we believe that his spirit will be spending Thanksgiving at his cabin in the woods when deer season starts this year because that was his favorite place to be, Thanks for the great giveaway

One year I had the 20 lb. turkey in the sink. I had recently gotten a new save/rescue cat that weighed about 3 lbs. All of a sudden I heard all this thumping, growling, and hissing. You guessed it, the cat had discovered the turkey. However the turkey was so big the cat couldn’t take off with it and was trapped under it. I laugh every time I think about it. 15 years later, I still have the cat. His nick name is devil spawn.

My favorite recipe is sage dressing. It is the best.
In the South we always had “sillybub” at Thanksgiving. Sweet scuppanong wine was combined with sugar and whip cream and then added to fruit ambrosia. Its a family recipe that goes back to colonial times.

My grandma makes sweet potatoes with orange slices instead of the usual marshmallows. It is SO GOOD and not too sweet–just perfect.

Every memory of Thanksgiving dinner at my parents table is special for me. It was quite an adjustment when I had to start being responsible for the meal preparation. After I realized that no matter what I did, I was disappointed, I quit trying so hard. I decided not to make or do everything that my parents did. Needless to say, my dinner still does not meet up to my memories, but I am a lot less frustrated now. This year is my first as a grandmother. I hope I won’t be so busy that I can’t enjoy my grandson; and, I hope I am able to create wonderful memories for my kids and the generations to come.

My favorite Thanksgiving memory was the first year I was married! I wanted to do the ‘big family dinner’ all by myself, and actually pulled it off (amazing) – had 20+ people and everything worked! Not sure I could even do that now!
I have two bloopers that I need to share about the first time I ever cooked a turkey dinner all on my own. I cooked it upside-down and forgot to take the bag with the neck and giblets out of the turkey before I cooked it… YIKES! It still tasted good, but made for a good laugh.

Not timing the turkey correctly meant I had to entertain guests for two hours before dinner. Since it was in-laws and none of us were that crazy about each other , that wasn’t a nice memory.

My favorite memory from Thanksgiving was when I cooked a huge 27 pound turkey and all the trimmings and had all my husbands married friends and their wives from his Army platoon over for dinner. It was a great time.
Some of my most memorable Thanksgivings were growing up in Northern California and going to my Great grandmothers house with all of my mothers side of the family. There were so many people and lots of cousins to play with. That’s when it was fun to sit at the kids table!!

Once I had pecan pie filling overflow and hit the hot oven element, causing flames and lots of smoke. Immediately turned the oven off, but had to fiish the rest of the oven chores in the microwave. Needless to say, the oven was a mess. Thank goodness for self-cleaning ovens.
The day before Thanksgiving quite a few years ago, I found out my son had some kind of rash that meant we couldn’t be around any pregnant women which ended our plans for Thanksgiving. The problem was, I was also pregnant. I remember going to the grocery store to buy a turkey and the emotions just got to me. I started crying as I was paying. I felt so bad for the cashier. Turns out, I had bought a frozen turkey. We wound up having to eat pizza for Thanksgiving which was ok since I spent the weekend in the seclusion of my bedroom.

I love sweet potatoes on Thanksgiving! We use sweet potatoes, brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter. Then top with marshmallows! Delish!

A few years ago I made a sunset magazine rubbed turkey recipe for Thanksgiving that was delicious!

My first turkey was a disaster – I used a cheapie throw away roasting pan and it leaked all over the bottom of the oven – we ended up with smoke in our apartment.

My favorite blooper is the first time I made Thanksgiving dinner for my mother-in-law who did not like me. Her pampered cat jumped up on the kitchen sink where the turkey was thawing in a pan of cold water. The cat tried to take a lick and ended up freezing its tongue to the turkey. We spent most of Thanksgiving in the Vet ER room while the vet tried to separate the two. My mother-in-law was hysterical and never did forgive me even though that was years ago.

my mom tried all her life to get me to eat cranberry sauce-hated it -it was a running Thanksgiving joke how she’d try to dress it up. Right after she passed 5 years ago, someone brought a cranberry pie (with fresh cranberries) to dinner-it was so good and I’m addicted to cranberries now- I always have to smile when I get all excited that the cranberries came in at the grocery store – mom would be amazed. I remember having Thanksgiving with all of my long distance family every year.
My youngest son is in the Army.He served three full years in Iraq.I had been dianost with RSD,my muscles in my legs aregoing out of my legs!Son couldn’t call much because they were hiding out!He missed about four Christmas.I have a older son in his late 20’s.As a mother I just didn’t have my heart on Chritmases!
Steven finnally came back to the states.He put in for a leave Christmas!Boy we were all HAPPY to see Steven!
I started Praying for the Lord to give me STRENGth to cook a Great Meal!I started cooking three days before,wr\hat I could put up!I baked a 21 pd. Turkeyma lg, Ham,and finnally Homecooked Bararque!
I told my husband I was going to eviet his Goldaghter and family,her MOM and DAD!It was a house full!
Some how God gave me the Strenght to Decorate and cook Dinner!The Lord has been there every minute with me!
They all came,Steven and Sam jr.and Big Sam really enjoyed themseves!I had my hole big dining talbe full and some on the stove.There wasn’t no turkey and baraque left!
I was in pain some but it was worth it!My family enjoyed and my youngest son Steven was HOME!
That was about three years ago.He is station in DC now.I told him he would meet someone in DC,.Sure enough he did and he just became a Father at 28!
Now we have to celebrate Christmas early at our House.They are going to her MOMs house Christmas!But BOY O BOY,Grandma’s little Landon James will be here Thanksgiving a little EARLY!!
And being sick ,my husband has been in training to Cooking! And he has already cooked a Turkey Breast!He is doing a Great job.He knows its going to come someday,he’ll be take care of me!But I Pray to the Lord everyday,to put his GRACE on me,for a MIRECAL!And he can do it!

As a child I remember going to my gram and paps for Thanksgiving. My pap would always be the Turkey carver and always have something funny to say. He sure made me laugh a lot and I really miss him..so my favorite memories of Thanksgiving were spent with my pap!
I remember my mom would always get up at like 4 or 5 am to put in the turkey the day.
my favorite Thanksgiving day celebrations were when my Grandma Young was still alive. she infused such a spirit into the holidays. my dad always chose to be the turkey carver.
My favorite recipe is a simple green bean casserole! No thanksgiving is complete without one!!!

I grew up with 7 brothers and sisters , so Thanksgiving was always a house full of great smells, great food, love and laughter. Life has progressed and we have all moved to different parts of the world. We have lost some of us along the way. Things will never be the same…. but those Thanksgivings will always be some of my greatest memories.
The first thanksgiving that i cooked my own meal, I cut my finger on the Crisco can and bled into the gravy trying to fix it…Needless to say, it was a disaster….Thankfully it has gotten better over the years and i have learned caution with cans!:)

My blopper is the first turkey i’ve ever cooked–i forgot to take out the neck and gizzard–AND the bird was under-cooked–hubby didn’t mind–he still enjoyed the side dish of stuffing and mashed potatoes. 🙂

The thanksgiving that was most memorable to me was when we were newly married and traveled
to be with family. My hubby had to be at work the next morning, since he was such a loyal employee
he would not stay put out of town in an ice storm. We traveled at speeds of 5-20 miles per hour.
We saw so many wrecks that we quit counting after 27. It took us eight hours to get home, instead of
2hours. The interstate was later closed.
We were so thankful to arrive home safely.

Twenty some years ago, when I had my new in-laws (big family and almost all attended) over for Thanksgiving, I did not know you were supposed to pull the neck and gizzards out of the bird. I wish I was kidding. Luckily, they still love me, and still trust me to make some holiday meals.

One year the turkey fell on the floor and we didn’t get to eat it that Thanksgiving.
One Thanksgiving, we lost power while I was preparing dinner. The power did come back on but dinner was delayed by several hours.

One of my favorite Thanksgiving memories is the year I cooked the turkey instead of my mom. I never cooked real food, just desserts but I had heard of basting the turkey with coke. My mom let me do it and it turned out to be a favorite with the whole family.
