It’s been a while since I’ve watched Supernanny on television, but my mom recently recorded a really good episode.  These 2 parents had 4 little boys, one being a newborn.  It was chaos much of the time and Supernanny was coming into help these parents use better parenting skills with their children.

Supernanny noticed that the parents weren’t disciplining their children in the most effective manner.  The dad had an opportunity to use Supernanny’s advice when the kids started hitting the computer.  So, here are some tips for “Proper Discipline,” according to Supernanny:

(1) Casually ask child to stop behavior.

(2)  Give a warning in a firm voice.

(3)  Place in Time Out 1 minute per year of child’s age.

(4)  Explain why child is in Time Out.  Make eye contact and get down to child’s level.

(5)  If child gets out of Time Out, place the child back in Time Out without speaking and reset the timer.

(6)  When time-out is finished, explain to the child why he or she was in Time Out.

(7)  Have child apologize.

(8)  Give child hugs and kisses.

I love this show and hope this helps someone out there.  I know it was a helpful reminder for myself. 🙂

I needed the reminder of putting back in to time-out if they get out before the timer goes off. Oops 🙂

I am giggling at #3 because my kids would be in a time out for 10 years or 8 years. Do you think it would work 😉

  3. Kayla says:

    Those are definitely good tips!
I agree with Wendi P-I think 1 year per age is a little long. Hehe!

  4. Rebecca L says:

My 3 year old must be totally out of control…I practically have to sit on him to keep him in time out! 🙁 I can do lots of things well be disciplining is not one of them!

  5. Becky says:

It’s actually one minute per age of the child. So if the child is 15, it would be 15 minutes. But I think for a teenager they would consider that a joke. They love going into their room and shutting the door behind them. ;(
Whoever said raising teenagers was easier than raising a toddler lied. lol

what if child doesnt get out of time out but continues to scream the entire time they are in there?

  7. I agree with this discipline…although as my boys have gotten older, I’ve also resorted to taking away toys. That seems to have a little more power than timeouts. 🙂
