We received 2 books from the Miss Trimble’s Trapdoor Series, including Miss Trimble’s Trapdoor and Miss Trimble’s Trapdoor: The Perseverance of Christopher Columbus.  Both books were written by Lori Jordan-Rice and illustrated by Fox Carlton Hughes.  These books are easy to read and fun.  I love that the chapters are short and that each has an illustration to go along with the chapter.  My 6 year old loves the books, but it’s a little harder for my 4 year old and almost 2 year old to sit through.  However, due to the short chapters, I was able to contain all 3 boys through most of the reading.

Miss Trimble’s Trapdoor: Book 1 is the first book in the series.  Tyler Thompson is the main character in the story.  He doesn’t have very many friends and hates school.  When Miss Trimble asks him questions in class, he never knows the answers.  He usually ends up retreating to his quiet area in the back of the classroom, where no one will bother him.  However, one day Tyler discovers a secret trapdoor beneath his desk.  There, he discovers a mysterious basement filled with old books and guarded by a magical talking dog name Barnabus Bailey.  Now he can travel to the past and learn about history up close!  You can find this book in bookstores or on Amazonfor $11.01 (retails for $12.95) right now!

The Perseverance of Christopher Columbus- Book 2 (Miss Trimble’s Trapdoor)is the second book in the series and is also a lot of fun to read!  Tyler Thompson is the star again!  He isn’t looking forward to October because he has tryouts for the school basketball team and he has to give an oral report on Christopher Columbus in front of the entire class.  He’s not sure which one is worse!  But at least he has his secret weapon – the magic trapdoor beneath his desk.  With his canine friend, Barnabas Bailey, Tyler travels back in time and finds himself on board the Santa Maria with Christopher Columbus.  When he sees all the challenges that even a great explorer faces, he knows he can’t give up.  This is a great book and you’ll enjoy reading it with your kids (or they’ll enjoy reading it by themselves)!  It’s available in bookstores and on Amazon for $11.01 (retails for $12.95) right now.

I received copies of the books from Phenix & Phenix to facilitate this review.  All opinions expressed in this post are 100% mine.

Thanks for the post. I have not heard of these but they sure sound fun. Short chapters and pics really do contain the little ones from scurrying away…..lol.

I like books like these but at the same time I’m annoyed by them. I have homeschooler, so books that always seem to occur in school or having the theme being of school is a confusing concept for my girls considering that they haven’t ever been IN a school institution. I wish authors would make books just a little more generic in regard to that so that we have more of a selection to choose from.
