Aloha Friday #29
Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday! Thanks to Kailani at An Island Life, I participate in Aloha Friday each Friday!
In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that they take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

My question is:
What family traditions do you have at Thanksgiving?
We always have dinner together as a family – with turkey and the works. I start putting up Christmas decorations the day after – yay!!!

My dad is ALWAYS in charge of the mashed potatoes! He has some secret ingredient (I think it’s sugar – I mean, why wouldn’t it be????) and nothing tastes closer to bliss than his mashed potatoes.

i can’t remember something in particular.. i guess we’re starting new traditions just now.. we’ll see:)

Have dinner with family and friends then next day I break out the Christmas decorations, my fav part!
We’ve started a tradition where we invite an additional person or group of people in addition to who we would normally have over for Thanksgiving.
We also don’t do Christmas decor until after 12/3. We have a slew of birthdays between Thanksgiving and 12/3 (my birthday ends it) and like to give special attention to those that have birthdays before putting up decorations for the holidays. It’s bad enough that retailers have Christmas decor up before even Halloween is over with!
We split the cooking duties and I always make the broccoli casserole and she always makes the mac and cheese lol…
We used to do Thanksgiving charades when I was growing up right after the meal.
It was always to have it a Moms..
But now that she is with the Lord..We are starting a new. Hopefully it will be having our new family unit every year at my home.
We use to always visit my parents who live far away.

We’ll eat dinner at my mom’s house.
We watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade usually if we are home. And we try to play some kind of game together as a family later on when dinner is over. Then we’ll watch a holiday movie like Home Alone, The Santa Clause etc. My son loves getting to stay up late!

Getting the Christmas tree the day after!
Thanksgiving in Canada is nothing like your Thanksgiving. We just have a low key dinner with family.
we always go around table and say one thing we are thankful for! also we bring out the Christmas music!!
We go over to my brother in law’s house for a turkey dinner.
Other than eating throughout the day (*wink*) we sit down for a formal meal and give thanks for our many blessing with prayer. Everyone also takes a turn sharing what they are most thankful for.

We just get together as a family and eat…eat…eat… the parents chat, the kidz scream and run and play. Its just a great big “family” day.
( lol… I must have turned into Dr. Seuss on that comment. )

One tradition we have is at the dinner table going around and each person telling something they are thankful for.
Going to my parents’ practically every year for dinner.
We eat way to much yummy food and then we have left over pie for breakfast. We spend the day just hanging out and playing games.
If we get together with my polish aunt and her family, we usually break Oplatek (pronouced Oh-Pwa-teck) which is basically a little wafer that we eat on special holidays. Once one person breaks off a piece, they say something nice about who they are sitting next to, then that person breaks off a piece and so on and so forth =]
We have a family orchard/farm market and we bake thousands of pies! The whole family pulls all-nighters the week of Thanksgiving and the kids love to try to stay up all night. By Thanksgiving day, no one even wants to see a pie, so I make cheesecakes!
we smoke a turkey and a ham. We just relax and eat. Oh and watch football.
We always eat lots and make way more that we need so we have left overs for days.
We always used to go to Bill’s sister’s house when we lived in New England because she lives in Boston, MA. But now that we live in Florida, we no longer have family around… but the one constant that is always there is FOOTBALL!! This year our team is even playing: The NY Giants! WooHoo.
