In Detroit, a manager of a self-storage business opened up a unit that was being rented by a woman who stopped paying her bill. In the unit, he found thousands of pieces of unopened mail. You might think, “Maybe she had a bad filing system?” Nope, it’s worse. She was a mail carrier who was stashing and hiding the mail – some of the pieces dated back to 2005. She said she didn’t have enough time to deliver all of the mail. When authorities looked back on her time sheets, she had left work early every day.

There have been more mail carriers caught and penalized for hoarding mail – hiding the mail in their dark basements, self-storage units, or garages. Some claim they didn’t deliver the mail because of bad weather conditions or because it gets dark earlier in the evenings. One man was sentenced for 18 months because he had been stealing thousands of dvds.

*Helpful Hint – If you send money in the mail, don’t send it as cash. Send it as either check or possibly gift card. At least with a check, you can stop payment, but with cash and even a gift card, it’s almost impossible to track.

I just had a package from Amazon.com lost last week! We have the worst luck with the mail service. I think that they may need to look into our mail carrier!
