MOVIE REVIEW – "The Women"

We recently watched a movie called “The Women.” The movie features Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Eva Mendez, Debra Messing, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Candace Bergen as some of its main actors.

After about 10 minutes into the movie, I wasn’t sure if I could stomach watching anymore of it. There were a couple of funny parts in the movie, but I actually felt disappointed at the end. I was disappointed that Meg Ryan’s daughter (in the movie) didn’t think her mom was “cool” and felt she needed to talk about her problems to another woman. I was disappointed that Meg Ryan felt “unsuccessful” as a PTA mom or a mom who threw charity events or as a mom in general. But as soon as she could become the success she put on hold to become a mom, she was suddenly “free” and “appreciated” by those around her.

Plus, there wasn’t a single man in the movie (with the exception of the ending). Not the best movie I’ve seen – that’s for sure.

And we wonder why the world and our daughters don’t think highly of the position of “mom?”

I actually really enjoyed this movie. I didn’t feel like the message was about her having to find success to be happy, but about finding who she was and not loosing her individuality. Here is a question that I think would make the difference: Have you seen the old version with Norma Sheer? I wrote a whole blog about my feelings on it 19 Sept 2008. Thanks for your review, its interesting to hear someone perception since I don’t know anyone who has seen it yet.
