Calling All Moms – What Would You Do?

For anyone out there reading my blog, I have a question for you.

My 4 year old whom I dearly love has been going through a phase recently. He talks back to me. If I tell him to do something, he says “no.” Now keep in mind, he does not always do this, but does it more often than I like (not that I ever like it…..anyways).

I’m not sure how to go about instilling a respect for adults into my 4 year old. I put him in his room for a time out (or more of a cooling off period) and I’ve taken things away as consequences. The behavior has not gone away.

I have sat down and talked with him and tried to teach him how to talk to me or other adults with respect, including how to politely ask for things.

Please don’t think my 4 year old is a heathen or terrible child, he’s just going through some sort of phase and I’m not sure what to do.

Any helpful tips?

No clue. I struggle with the same thing. Good luck, let me know what works.

Is his room a fun place to be? It might not be that bad of a punishment? *gulp* I often find that restitution (jobs, chores, etc) works well when cool off time does not. When explained prior to the offense, it can work well! “That will earn you dish duty tonight.” “You’ve just earned cleaning the stove top.” Don’t worry…he’s just a normal kid. 🙂
